My parents (mostly my mom) raised me VERY "intentionally" - no commercial TV (only PBS, 1 hour/day), no cartoons, no Barbie, etc. Lots of classic movies and books, homemade dinner every night at the dinner table with my parents, etc. Of course when I was a kid I wanted Barbie and cartoons, etc., but now I look back and am so happy with the things I was taught and the way I turned out that I wouldn't have changed a thing. Unfortunately, the world is a much faster place now, 25 years later, and it is impossible to keep kids away from as much tv and computers. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

the world changed and im glad you're happy how you were raised. It is however no better than how other people were raised [ Reply | More ]

np: i don't think she meant "any other" to include neglect, abuse or anything overtly terrible. but did withholding barbies make op a better person? prob. not. [ Reply | More ]

I think there's a lot more to it than not giving your child a Barbie [ Reply | More ]

of course. but usually its part of a larger philosophy/approach. as it seems to have been in OP's case. part of parenting is transmitting values adn if your values are that commercial tv is bad, or barbie is bad, then you go. or ifyou think barbie is perfectly fine, you go, too. [ Reply | More ]

and my parents didn't pay much attention to tv viewing, never helped with homework, and sent me out in the yard to be home by dark and I turned out really well too! [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. i keep my children away from it but their peers know so much about Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Hannah Montana they might as well sit and watch it themselves. Its better to learn to swim in the tide without getting pulled under. [ Reply | More ]

my parents didn't allow any tv and basically kept us as sheltered as possible - I was that kid in college who gained 20 lbs from gorging on fast food, watching tv 10 hrs a day, and drinking WAY too much. There is definitely a happy medium to be found. [ Reply | More ]

the influence parents have on children is vastly overated. My two siblings and I could not be more different. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, but I think as parents it is best to try to avoid extremes. [ Reply | More ]

OP's parents don't sound extreme - they sound like a LOT of the moms on this board [ Reply | More ]

op - I meant to write this in response to that other post about pareting "back in the day" but mis-posted. However, I never said my parents never let me do anything, and I went to college "normal" and healthy and never did any of those things. Plus, a lot of the "rules" relaxed when I was 11 or so [ Reply | More ]

I don't agree that it is impossible to do now, it is just we keep getting lazier about saying no to our children's pleas. My parents were very similar to op's parent, and I am so grateful for it as are all of my sibs. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is difficult to do now, moreso than 20-30 years ago. But no, not impossible [ Reply | More ]
