Manhattan moms: Due in October and working on my registry. Not sure if I should bite the bullet and just go for a bugaboo or not. I don't really care about having the 'brand' but I want something super all-terrain since the baby will be pretty young through the winter and we walk everywhere. (No car and rarely take cabs) What do you think? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

bingo. the bug plowed through the slush and snow piles on street corners without a problem, and was great for the park. [ Reply | More ]

I have to say no to the bug it's way overpriced for what you get and believe me even though you think you will not be taking a cab or subway you definitely will never be able to if you have a bug. they are totally impracticle for NYC [ Reply | More ]

most people end up with more than one stroller anyway--we had a bug for every day and a volo for trips on the bus or cabs. [ Reply | More ]

Ditto, though a bug frog (with seat, not bassinet) fits in the trunk of a cab without folding, fwiw. You put it in so the seat frame is parallel with the top of the trunk. [ Reply | More ]

I beg to differ. I think they are impractical for everyone BUT a major city! And btw, they are SUPER easy to fold down. [ Reply | More ]

FWIW, we had both and when dc was old enough to express a preference we'd ask which she'd prefer--always chose the bug. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not talking about comfort, I'm talking about a practiacal stroller to get around town with. The bug is not fun to carry up and down stairs and does not fold away to nothing. [ Reply | More ]

i would never get a volo for my everyday. no padding, wheels way inferior to bug. you use your stroller so much in nyc, you should invest in it if you can. [ Reply | More ]

I was just thinking that the Bugaboo was a great investment (even though we didn't really use it past ds's first birthday because he has always liked to walk everywhere.) But now there are tons of cheaper yet still easily maneuverable and durable strollers out there. I would check them out first. [ Reply | More ]

We also walked everywhere and rarely took cabs, dc was born in Nov., and we bought one (and this was 6 years ago right before they started selling them here). Worth every penny, IMHO, and we gave it to friends who are using it now with their newborn, and they love it too. [ Reply | More ]

I have a very good idea of what I'm talking about... all-terrain is a silly thing to say if op is planning to "walk a lot in Manhattan" with a newborn. I'd get a bug - I had one and it was great for everything. That being said, I wouldn't call it (or most strollers... my sister has one that is really heavy-duty in Colorado) all-terrain [ Reply | More ]

this a$$ backwards and I agree that you are talking out your .... In Colorado, unless she pushing a stroller up a ski slope chances are she is and out of the car mostly. In NYC you WALK everywhere, nicely paved streets, potholes, over snow mounds, giant puddles, the park, up and down curbs. When it comes to strolling it's more all terrain than anywhere else --np BTW [ Reply | More ]

my sister lives in the mountains and goes jogging all over the place, mostly off-road, so please don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about. I agree that NYC has a variety of terrain, but for the most part it is relatively one terrain [ Reply | More ]

np: You might know what you are talking about in regards to your sister in Colo. (I don't know her so I'll assume you are right.) But you don't know shit about life in NYC for people who walk a lot. Most people I know in NYC go through two strollers per kid because they wear down the the wheels. A tough stroller (aka all-terrain) here is a really smart idea. Especially if you are planning on having a second. [ Reply | More ]

I have 3 kids in NYC and walk everywhere. And i've had the wheels replaced on my strollers, but I would not consider them to be "all-terain". Good for the city, yes, but I wouldn't take them off-roading. There is no need for your terrible attitude [ Reply | More ]

not to mention the fact that it has to be as strong as a pack mule, becuase you pretty much pile about 40 punds of cr@p on it, in it and hanging from it, in addition to the kid! [ Reply | More ]

yes bug is totally worth it. up & down curbs & stairs, makes pushing easier, & can steer w/ one hand if you need to. you'll need a separate travel stroller tho, like macalaren triumph. [ Reply | More ]

I like my bug. There are definitely less expensive but still great strollers out there that will take you through the winter, though. If you're concerned about snow and ice, something with three big tires might be even easier to push than the bugaboo. You can also consider the phil & teds if you think you might want two kids fairly close together. (I wish I had done this - now expecting ds2 and ds1 will only be 2.5 when he is born. The bug is not so practical with 2.) [ Reply | More ]

tritto. I love the P&T. and if you are even remotely considerling a second DB when they will both be stroller age (which in NYC i think is at least 3-4), it's the only way to go. Strollers are to expensive to have to buy a whole different set up in 18 mos! [ Reply | More ]

We have a Bertini Bidwell -- it is also an all terrain stroller -- and a Mac. The Bertini is not light and doesn't fold up small but it has bigger wheels than the Bug and rocked the snow and sidewalk heaves (I'm in Brooklyn and we have a lot of tree root caused uneven sidewalks. Some of them stop the Mac in it's tracks if you are not paying attention.) The Bertini is a good bit cheaper than the Bug and it has one option I love -- you can put a toddler and a little on in it at the same time with an optional extra seat. [ Reply | More ]

Bite the bullet. The bug with the bassinet is really good for winter newborns -- you can really wrap them up well in there. I live in the city and have a bug and a maclaren and the two don't compare. I only use the maclaren when I'll have to fold it up en route for some reason, which is not frequently. IMO Bugs are better for city/walking life and maclarens are better for suburb/driving life. Also, it's MUCH easier to go up and down stairs with a bug. [ Reply | More ]

I like the micralite toro better because it is easier to get into the subway and folds like an umbrella stroller and has the big air tires. And yes, "all terrain" is very helpful in the city. Not at all about going "all out." I can get my freaking stroller down subway stairs, up my walkup stairs and across the park. End of story. So quit your sneering people. [ Reply | More ]

We were in the same situation. Got the Bug and v happy with it, but there's a lot more choice now. Check out Buy Buy Baby and see what you like. Got the P&T this year since now need a double. Like it too, not quite as much, but it would have been totally fine. The new P&T Vibe is v eye-catching! [ Reply | More ]

I felt the same way about the brand and thought the cost was extravagant, but once we checked out all the other options, nothing came close to the bugaboo. We got the Cameleon since my DH is very tall. We love it and it's been worth every penny. The knock-offs don't compare and most are either wider or heavier. We have a Maclaren Triumph for travel and subways. [ Reply | More ]
