I think that A-rod has balls and should get what's coming to him. He played around and got caught. [ Reply | More ]

A lot. Because he's continually publicly humiliated her, and left her in the hospital with their newborn to go visit Madonna (even if it is just for some cult religion thing and not sex) [ Reply | More ]

That's why he had a prenup. I think she knew what she was getting into. I think she rolled the dice to get a high rolling lifestyle. [ Reply | More ]

So if a wealthy man humiliates his wife, she gets compensated. And if a poor or middle class man humiliates his wife, she gets...what? Does the humiliation become more worthy of compensation if the man has money? [ Reply | More ]

No, it just really sucks for the rest of us that we can't extract the just monetary punishment. [ Reply | More ]

Divorce settlements aren't supposed to be punishment or revenge. They should be about dividing the marital assets fairly and providing for the children. In this case, he earned all the money and they aren't in a communal property state. She should get child support and a bit to tide her over until she gets a job. Unless she and A-rod agree that she should SAH, in which case he should support her. [ Reply | More ]

Well, they ought to be. Splitting up is one thing, acting like he has should have real consequences. [ Reply | More ]

There will be consequences. His marriage is ending. But to assign financial penalties is insane. Cheating on your spouse while wealthy isn't worse than cheating on your spouse when poor. So why should the penalties be different? [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I think the penalties should be proportionately the same. There should be a pain and suffering penalty, like in civil cases. [ Reply | More ]

Why not take every divorce to court and bring in a jury to weigh each party's claim against one another? Please! She didn't earn any of this money. He did. End of story.\ [ Reply | More ]

I don't see how that could ever happen. I have my own income, my own assets, joint assets with DH, etc. I've never put myself in a situation where I've lived in DH's house, on DH's salary, etc. [ Reply | More ]

We don't award pain and suffering to cause pain though. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, we do - it's punishment in a monetary form for the pain/suffering that the other party suffered. [ Reply | More ]

Pain and suffering settlements are not intended to punish the guilty. If it were, our legal system wouldn't allow insurance to cover these payments. They are intended to compensate the wronged party. And these payments have NO place in divorce. Divorce is closer to contract law than to torte. [ Reply | More ]
