My son is 7. Very tall (100th percentile) and lean. However he has an enormous appetite - like will eat and adult-sized meal and ask for another (meal that is - not serving). I am very fat and am militant about ultra-healthy, unprocessed food but I am lost when it comes to how MUCH to feed him? Do you continue to give your kids food when they ask for it even if they've eaten a lot? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Hmmm, maybe have him wait 15-20 minutes and if he's still hungry, then give him more? [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't limit healthy food at all unless he starts to get chubby. He may burn more calories than you can even imagine just growing and being an active kid. [ Reply | More ]

i would offer a healthy portion that you feel is appropriate for a 7 year old. If he still feels hungry you can offer him more vegetables or fruit. I would say that is all that is available for second helpings. [ Reply | More ]

First of all fair is not a word we use in my house - lots of things in this world aren't "fair". Second of all I don't sit down at the table with him and eat different food or keep food in the house that he can't have. But thanks for the cheery message. [ Reply | More ]

don't take this personally. we have the same issue in my house. my husband thinks he can eat potato chips drink soda ect. and say it's o.k. because he is not agreeing. I disagree with this because it just makes the kids want it even more because they are being denied. [ Reply | More ]

Well, why would you be that way with him and not yourself? Set an example and you won't have to worry about him being overweight. [ Reply | More ]

i think she says that you have have control issues with food and unknowingly could be passing tho se along by being too controlling with the perfectly ultra healthy unprocessed food. he'll find a way to get the junk he is denied. [ Reply | More ]

If he's not fat, why in the world would you even consider limiting his food? In fact, it sounds like you need to add some high calorie foods to his diet. He is probably eating so much b/c he's not getting the calories he needs b/c your feeding him what an overweight adult woman should eat, not what a healthy growing boy should eat. [ Reply | More ]

hmmmm, can you really not imagine the answer to this on your own? Are you trying to cure the OP of her fatness with this question? [ Reply | More ]

actually, I used to be very fat and there are so many reasons why one would be so. i'm guessing this OP has no clue what a portion size looks like. [ Reply | More ]

does he eat very fast - if he does maybe needs to take more time to enjoy his food and allow himself to feel satisfied before having more [ Reply | More ]

I wonder what your anweres would have been had OP not called herself "very fat". In any case, if he's honestly still hungry, I'll give him another serving. As another poster said, if he starts to get chubby, lower the portion sizes. [ Reply | More ]

I totally DO NOT mean this to be snarky, but why are you very fat if you are militant about ultra-healthy food? To answer your question, he should eat until he's full, and as long as we're talking about whole grains, veggies, lean meats, etc., it's okay. You don't want to exercise portion control with a 7 yo!!!!! (With yourself, yes ;-)). [ Reply | More ]
