DH is SAHD and I just got laid off. He thinks I am crazy because I say that I can't decide if I want to stay home with the kids because I know it is not an option today (his earning potential is 1/10 of mine since he has been out of the work force so long). Thoughts? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes, but I feel that I have worked really hard to build up our nest egg, so don't want to dig into it. [ Reply | More ]

not to mention that if neither of you work, you will both have the problem of trying to get back into the workplace eventually which can be rough at the beginning. [ Reply | More ]

one of us will work. I think it has to be me and don't see a choice, but DH says there is. [ Reply | More ]

seems like the person who makes the most $$ ought to work. Sorry but you need to find another job [ Reply | More ]

That wasn't the question. DH says he is willing to go back to work if I want, but I say I can't say if I want that (one of us will stay home) since I don't think it is a finanacial option today. He says I should think theorectically and we can find a way to make it work. [ Reply | More ]

theoretically will only get you so far. You have to be practical (although your DH sounds lovely) It's nto a good idea to dip into savings that you will need for school retirement etc. Maybe you could come up with some compromise where you both work pt or something, but unless you have unlimited funds, I think you have tofind a job. Sorry [ Reply | More ]

you are missing the point. DH wants me to consider if I would want to stay at home. My question is am I being reasonable to say that I can't consider it because I don't think it is practical? [ Reply | More ]

np: Not necessarily. If OP wants to take time off, and has the savings, she has earned it. Also, her DH may want to start working on another career anyway unless the plan is for him to be SAHD forever. Besides, it may take a while for OP to get a new job too. [ Reply | More ]

It may well be, but I would not close the door on him working. He may yet surprise you. [ Reply | More ]

OR there (not OP) Just saying, if what they have been doing works, and OP makes 10 times what DH does, she should just find another job. Unless they can live onhis salary of course [ Reply | More ]

op: does it change your mind if our net worth is $3.5 million and I have enough severance to carry me through 2009? [ Reply | More ]

In that case I'd take at least the summer off before looking again. Very few places are hiring this time of the year anyway. [ Reply | More ]
