The only thing I don't touch is alcohol. Honestly, you would have to look pretty hard to find raw mozerella and feta, and any raw cheese at a boutique shop is made under pretty stringent requirements. I heard in France they don't eat raw veggie/salad but eat raw cheese, go figure! [ Reply | More ]

my doc said a drink once or twice a week was fine, as was two cups fo coffee a day. she said this from day one. [ Reply | More ]

If you look it up, alcohol use in pregnancy is linked to ADD/ADHD and a couple other learning disabilities. Dyslexia already runs in my family, so I don't want to chance it. [ Reply | More ]

I meant to say moderate alcohol use. [ Reply | More ]

those studies haven't been totally proven, and a glass of wine on rare occasions isn't going to hurt you [ Reply | More ]

"haven't been totally proven" isn't exactly reassuring. OBs are going off their experience with kids they deliver. How are they going to know that 5-7 years after they said it was ok for you to drink 1-2 glasses a week that your kid was diagnosed with ADD? [ Reply | More ]

why would an OB know anything about children 5-7 years down the road? Or what other factors could have contributed to their ADD? [ Reply | More ]

the point is, they are telling you moderate alcohol is fine, because they don't see the effects of it in their practice. The only thing that they will see is severe fetal alcohol syndrome, of course moderate drinking isn't going to cause that. [ Reply | More ]

the thing is, mothers have been moderately drinking for decades, and only in the pat 15-20 years has it become a real issue (i.e. NO drinking has become more common) at the same time there has been a huge rise in ADD/ADHD diagnoses [ Reply | More ]

rise in diagnoses, but honestly I'm sure that my dad is ADD and my mom is dyslexic. Back then they just didn't get any help to cope and were labeled as dumb or uncooperative. That doesn't mean that it didn't exist. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, I'm vegetarian, so no raw fish for me anyway. I would stay away from that without tons of wasabi. Americans rarely eat enough wasabi to kill the nasties in the fish [ Reply | More ]

wasabi isn't going to kill anything in fish, but I do like it! [ Reply | More ]

really? I've always been told that wasabi helps to slow the parasites and kill them. Is that an urban legend? I tried googling it, and can't find any reputable site that says if this is true or untrue. [ Reply | More ]

I have been eating just about everything in moderation - trying to keep the cheese pasturized but i love cheese too much to give it up completely. I've never liked deli meat but if I did I'd eat it. I also eat the occasional piece of sushi because I adore it and sometimes have terrible cravings, but only from places I know are very good, and not high-mercury fish. Also have been having a bit of wine since 2nd trimester - 1 glass a week at most, usually less. [ Reply | More ]

the cheese is most likely all pasteurized so not a biggie. deli meat can give you listeria which is very very rare, but causes big problems for pregnant women. [ Reply | More ]

well, I dont have liseria that I know of and I think all the cheese I eat is pateurized. I think I just need to try and think before I eat! [ Reply | More ]

I admit I didn't pay as much attention with #2, but I did recently read about a study that concluded that in fact what the mom eats during pregnancy really does have an impact on the child, not just at birth but for their life. not to guilt trip you or anything, but maybe you should google it and see for yourself. isn't that junk food vs. healthy food? It's not really about parasites and diseases if I remember correctly. [ Reply | More ]
