df from college is having major infertility issues, she just confided in me that she has been trying for over a year. I feel horrible for her. She is, however, I would guess somewhere betwn 50-100lbs overweight. Definitely not my place to bring this topic up with her in relation to fertility, right? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Don't bring it up to her. She could be struggling with PCOS. The weight may not be a factor at all. Just be a supportive loving friend to her--I/F is so hard to go through. [ Reply | More ]

oh yea sure, kick your friend while she is down and explain that when you went to med school, you found out that being 50-100 pounds overweight was the cause of her infertility. [ Reply | More ]

not the cause, but a factor, right? And I do actually have a PhD in a medical science, not that its the reason I would bring it up. She was always talking about our other friend who struggled with infertility and was a very very thin marathon runner & how she thought the woman should just stop running for a bit and see if it would help! You are quiet full of yourself. Lets see... maybe her dh is shooting blanks. You are not acting like a friend. Whats your deal? [ Reply | More ]

why so angry? Jeez. I am not "quiet" full of myself. What is YOUR deal? And her DH already got tested and is fine. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not angry at all, just calling a spade a spade. I don't buy your act. I think you are rude and most definately not a supportive friend. Frenemy? Maybe. But friends don't need to come to anon message boards to get ideas of how to tell their friend they are fat. And before you assume, I'm a size four with two healthy children. [ Reply | More ]

calm down lady. I've been friends with this woman for 17 years and never once mentioned her weight - why should i care? But I know how desperately she wants a db, and its hard to watch someone go through something, etc... as the woman below said, its her life & struggle but I wish I could help her [ Reply | More ]

np: I probably said stupid stuff related to babies/infertility before I went through it. Just cut her a break and be a good friend. I/F can totally turn your world upside down. [ Reply | More ]

gross generalization. Many of them do have fertility trouble. NYC is not the only place with infertility. [ Reply | More ]

You really can't say anything. I am watching my friend spend tens of thousands of dollars on treatments, and when her RE told her she needed to lose the weight, she flipped out and got a new doctor. It's her life, her struggle - I can only support her during the hard times. [ Reply | More ]

jeez, what's with the UB'er that went ballistic? You're probably right, it might have something to do with it. Both extreme underweight and overweight issues do effect fertility. It's ironic that she brought up the marathon runner, b/c I know someone that actually did get pregnant after she stopped running 10-15 miles a day. This all being said, I would not bring it up. I find it unlikely that she doesn't already know that weight can be a significant issue for fertility, almost every book says to get to your ideal weight if you're having problems. [ Reply | More ]
