Help! Ever since we introduced our 8 mo to solids he's been really constipated. Not every day, but often enough to be worried. We told our ped, and she said "more fruit, more water" we're having a hell of a time getting him to drink water. He refuses h2o from his bottle (he's kind of a drama queen with his bottle, won't take breast milk from it either). He's balking at a sippy cup too. But he's backed up! What to do? no bananas - give lots of pears, peaches. no crackers or bread, and babies love prunes - either in jar or in juice. That should do it. [ Reply | More ]

thanks. we've cut out bananas & apples. introduced prunes. but the water thing is the biggie. he'll drink water out of MY water bottle, which is a great way to give him a bath in his own clothes.......this seems like it should be easier!!! [ Reply | More ]

BF or FF? If BF, cut back on solids for a couple of days, BF more. oatmeal is better than rice cereal also. [ Reply | More ]

he's bf'd, but not exclusively (anymore). He gets about 1 formula bottle a day, 2 breast feeds and as much milk as i can pump [ Reply | More ]

he's still mostly BF - I would cut back on the solids, just for a coupld of days and have those solids be more fruit, less cereal. breastmilk is better than water for constipation anyway. [ Reply | More ]

let him sip water out of your cup. my non-bottle taking dd loves this. try prunes. next step would be glycerin suppository to clean him out. [ Reply | More ]

What makes you think he is constipated? [ Reply | More ]

crying and turning red as the devil when he tries to poop is the main indicator [ Reply | More ]

but that doesn't mean he is constipated. It really doesn't. You can help with that by letting him push his feet on your hands - just giving him some resistance. The bowels change with solids. Chances are he's just fine and not constipated, but there is no reason not to give him pruens (its a great food) in his regular diet, just don't go over board. How often does he have a bm?
