Would you get a first grader tutored in math if your school had progressive math like Everyday Math and your child was not learning basic math facts or operations? I'm thinking about it. How to find a tutor? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If your child is in the first grade, can't you teach him/her? [ Reply | More ]

Not in a million years. Everyday math is fine - and if you can't incorporate "basic math facts" into every day life something is wrong. What is your child not capable of doing? [ Reply | More ]

you cannot seriously be asking this question. What do you think we would do - play more advanced math games. [ Reply | More ]

WTF??? Send him to camp to learn tennis or golf or something. Are you really going to drill math into your kid over the summer? Get him some workbooks a year or two ahead if mood strikes him. [ Reply | More ]

my dd just finished first grade at an everyday math plus supplementation school and by the end of the year, they were learning division. to hear that OP's similarly situated dc doesn't know basic math facts doesn't sound right. [ Reply | More ]

maybe its because all children are differnt? We all have strenghts and weaknesses. We don't raise or teach clones. Whatever happened to allowing children to be great in Math. Or a great poetry writer? Or a really great baseball player? Must they all be the same? Great in everything? [ Reply | More ]

depends..is dc a rsing first grader or 1st going to second? If first going to second and school has not supplemented at all and started the process of teaching math facts, you shudl just spend alittle time helping dc to memorize them at home....5 -10 minutes per dya this summer and dc will be fine. Everyday math is terrible, but I would teach dc myself, not hire a tutor. [ Reply | More ]

np: I think unless the kid is behind and need to catch up, you should really lay off on academics and let kids do fun stuff over the summer, especially so early on. [ Reply | More ]

I have no problem getting some workbooks with problems for dc to do when mood strikes him over the summer, but teaching over the summer is over the top IMO for kids that are already advanced. Then you'll complain once the school starts that dc is bored. [ Reply | More ]
