Does anyone have any experience applying to privates from a NYC daycare? Or anyone at private that knows of kids there that went to daycare. Just curious (dd goes to daycare, probably going public). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Do you mean daycare as opposed to preschool? [ Reply | More ]

Well, daycare with a preschool curriculum. Not daycare in some lady's living room. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know of any kids who still went to daycare at age 4. The issue would be that someone would have to write a school report for the applications process. WHy not just send dc to a preschool for a year? [ Reply | More ]

I could I guess, although my daycare has an educational director that could technically write the report... [ Reply | More ]

Lots of good daycares have a "preschool" room. [ Reply | More ]

We did. Both dcs were in local (cheap!) daycare and they are both at TT but we are alums, but I was told this wouldn't have made any difference is that helps [ Reply | More ]

nah...it probably helped, but many of those were shut out this year (not mine, btw, so don't call sour grapes). you can't deny the fact that your alum status played a factor here. [ Reply | More ]

helped? lady, I know either as a new parent to this system or just because you are not exactly an insider, that you want to believe all legacy dcs are idiots who waltzed in because of some connection. It just isn't the case. There are plenty of us to go around who apply and their don't have to take any of us - we have given no $$ ever to either school. Why not just consider it likely that smart parents beget smart dcs and call it a day. [ Reply | More ]

who said legacy dc's are all idiots, and why so defensive? all I said was your legacy status probably helped in your case, coming from a daycare. [ Reply | More ]

It couldn't have, we had not anything to do with either school until we showed up for the interview so why would they take us over another applicant f they didn't see something in dcs [ Reply | More ]

If alum status has no impact on admissions, why do the schools ask the question on their applications? [ Reply | More ]

I think they want to know so they can look you up and see what your involvement is. If you are involved or giving money maybe that is a factor but I have heard they just drop you in the general pile if there has been no involement [ Reply | More ]

OP. Yes, I think kids tend to test well b/c they are in a school environment for so many cumulative hours. Our daycare sends lots of kids to G&T - it's more the private school thing that would worry me. (NOT that dd is going to Hunter) [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunately the daycare director just doesn't have the same kind of relationships with admissions people as a preschool director does. Not impossible but harder. [ Reply | More ]

OP. Thanks for your thoughts. If our daycare director has been there for 15 years would she necessarily not have relationships though vs. someone at not-the-92ndSt-Y nursery school? I'm trying to use real world examples to judget this one. [ Reply | More ]

PSDs inflate their role and significance to get people to apply to their schools and pay 20K for blocks and crayons. On the other side of the process, from a K-12 admissions position I promise you we take who we want and don't listen to what the PSDs tell us they want or think [ Reply | More ]

Bull. You don't need a "connected" PSD to get your kid into a good school. I'd rather think this even lessen your chances somewhat. [ Reply | More ]

My older child went to daycare (and now so does younger one). About 1/2 her class applied to private school. Those kids now go to Bearley, Spence, Nightengale, Buckley, Dalton (2 kids), Riverdale, Fieldston Lower, Ethical Culture, Claremont and Berkley Carrol. Anyway, except for the one at Claremont (and maybe BC), I think even by UB standards it's a great list of schools. [ Reply | More ]

Our daycare is also a preschool and has always sent kids to a wide range of public and private schools, including TT. Very few kids were legacies. The former director was well known to the ongoing schools - I am not sure about her replacement but the ongoing schools definitely knew and liked our daycare. I think it can be an advantage since not that many kids were competing for the same spots. You might not get as much handholding or the feeling you are being brokered, but if it's an accredited preschool it should be fine. [ Reply | More ]
