DH's sister is a total hypochondriac. I have a serious, diagnosed medical condition but I don't blab about it all the time, and even when I'm not feeling well I try to carry on as normal unless it is really really bad, but if she has a mild headache you'd think the world was coming to an end. I am SO sick of it! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I hear you. I have medical disabilities and my MIL is a hypochondriac. She calls here telling me that I don't know what she's going through...meanwhile her symptoms are in her head and for attention. I'm actually living with chronic pain but don't complain 24/7 about it [ Reply | More ]

not too bad, but the heat stinks. My SIL "claims" she has fibromyalgia, but no one has proven it, and whenever she wants to do something like go shopping, everything is fine. Its when we all get together that she's feeling terrible and can't help [ Reply | More ]

NP: Well, fibromyalgia is a disease that's hard to prove. [ Reply | More ]

op - but it is also a disease that many doctors say is 90% mental. Besides, she has had all the tests and they have told her she does not have it [ Reply | More ]

I'm definitely with you on this, but it does sound like you're predisposed not to believe her. I have a good friend with it and it's definitely not mental and it's ruining her life. [ Reply | More ]

No, I'm predisposed not to like her very much, but NO ONE believes her. It is really a lot in the mind though, no matter what. [ Reply | More ]

I'm very understanding, but it makes me upset when people project diseases on themselves when they really have mental problems that need sorting out. They'd rather get drugs for the "pain" than address the mind and perhaps get drugs for the mind which might really help [ Reply | More ]

(poster from below). I had spinal surgery and as a result have RSD. This was and is not in my mind. I would never want this pain. I do believe the mind does help with the control of pain. I dont' let the pain control me or my life if not I would be suicidal. I had a Dr tell me once that RSD wasn't real. I told her I sure hope she doesn't ever know that pain and walked out of her office [ Reply | More ]

I believe that RSD is real (I'm so sorry you're dealing with it as a result of spinal surgery), as is fibromyalgia, but I also believe there are people who will appropriate the symptoms of pain diseases when it is convenient for them, and they are the ones who should be treating their mind [ Reply | More ]

yes I do agree with you on this. I do know ppl who really make things up for attention and other issues but also know many ppl dealing with real issues. [ Reply | More ]

I agree - that was just my point. It sounds like Op's SIL is making things up [ Reply | More ]

gotcha..I know ppl like that. They don't feel well when it's convenient. I'm 6mo pg, have 2 other dc and my MIL calls me and says OH I don't feel well and can't get to the pharmacy..could you come over to do this for me? She lives in the Bronx and I'm in Manahttan. She says oh you are so young (I'm 40) and you don't know how bad my bones are at 77yr. I told her I do since I have arthritis in my spine and osteoporosis in my foot (because of the RSD) btu she says oh you can't imagine. UGHhhh [ Reply | More ]

What is it with SIL's? My brother's wife is the same way. And then she gets very upset if people don't call her every few days to check on how she's feeling. [ Reply | More ]

seriously. I mean, I try and have patience with her - and when we're all together I basically do EVERYTHING (from helping MIL - her mother - make meals to cleaning up after HER dc because she sits around and complains the whole time). And the times I've been feeling ill and been quieter she remarks - later - that I was in a bad mood or she thinks I hate everyone. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr [ Reply | More ]
