Just hired a part time nanny one month ago. She works 24 hrs a week on average @ $15/hr. I am heading overseas with the baby next month for 3 weeks to visit family. How to handle paying her? Do I have to pay her for all the hours she would have worked? She is a nickel and dimer so far and it works my last nerve. Any advice greatly appreciated :) She is great with the baby (12mo) btw. Pay her the average of what you have paid her to date. [ Reply | More ]

no, I mean figure out on average what you pay her a week, then pay that for 3 weeks. [ Reply | More ]

Of course she's a nickel and dimer ... you pay her so poorly, nickels and dimes are quite valuable to her. So sad. [ Reply | More ]

do I really??? I am being serious. This is what I always paid in NYC and now I live in CT and thought that was still the going rate. I am really clueless with these things as I don't have many friends with kids/nannies [ Reply | More ]

np: that rate doesn't seem so bad to me. (Lower than we pay our PT sitter/nanny but in the realm) BUT if you have "lain claim" to certain hours each wk from her you need to pay her for those hours even though you don't need her. Or consider her a free agent. [ Reply | More ]

Then she's risking the nanny finding a new job. Most people would pay while they're on vacation and the nanny knows this. [ Reply | More ]

I have had the same parttime nanny for 5 years. I think the relationship works really well because I have always treated her like a fulltime nanny, but prorated. So if I have engaged her for the same two days each week, I pay her whenever I cancel, go away, etc. on those days, plus I pay her for federal holidays that fall on those days. I think this is only right. It's not her fault that you're going away. [ Reply | More ]

I would pay her for the three weeks and if you want to nickel and dime her back ask that 24 hours of the time being paid for be used for any "extra overtime" so if one week she works 25 hours you don't need to pay her an extra 15. [ Reply | More ]
