Advice? Have a relative from Europe coming who wants to go to a show with me and dinner too. They want very expensive seats etc. DH and I are on a tight budget right now. We really have nothing extra. This is money we don't have right now to spend. Is it rude for me to say I can only do one or the other? I would prefer not to do the dinner would love to do the show. What would you do? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think it is more polite to have dinner with them so you can talk/catch up. [ Reply | More ]

I wish I had read this before I emailed her. I just agreed to the show. I can't do both and agree with the poster also that I always feel too rushed with dinner before a show. Uggh. Single career minded relative that doesn't get my life now at all! [ Reply | More ]

Tell them you can't afford it. What's the harm in being honest? [ Reply | More ]

Just because you live in NYC does not mean that you're obligated to do all the fancy stuff that tourists do on vacation. Is this person coming by himself? [ Reply | More ]

I actually feel rushed at dinner before a show and too full. I prefer to do one or the other. Can you just say you can't get a babysitter until 7:30 when the show starts (or something) and would love to do the play and then a drink? [ Reply | More ]

why be dishonest? There is no shame in living within your means. [ Reply | More ]

OR. Yes, you can do that too. But some people are really dense and are weird. We have overseas guests all the time, and going to the Empire State Bldg, plays, helicopter rides (true story - we declined), Tavern on the Green, the Boathouse all in one weekend adds up big time! Sometimes we just say we are busy for X part of the day. [ Reply | More ]

You know, I resent how out-of-town guests assume we go to places like Tavern on the Green all the time -- as well as see all the Broadway shows -- just because we live here. [ Reply | More ]

But "busy" or "other plans" even if it is busy sitting on the couch watching Blues Clues or the other plans are to sleep late and stay in your underwear till noon is not dishonest. [ Reply | More ]
