schools are not overcrowded because of "cheaters." they are overcrowded because the city has not built schools to keep up with development. you angry vigilante moms need to take it up with Bloomberg, not going all sherlock holmes on your kids' classmates. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no one said the schools are overcrowded because of cheaters, but the cheaters add to the problem and don't deserve to be there. i have better things to do with my time than hunt down scumbags, but if they get kicked out, i won't shed any tears. [ Reply | More ]

actually, parents at some of the most overcrowded schools have taken it up with bloomberg and gotten some results. [ Reply | More ]

nope, just promises that are so far pretty empty. Building new schools is not a part of the plan so far, unfortunately. [ Reply | More ]

the foundling hospital is pretty much a done deal. how quickly the school will open is another question. [ Reply | More ]

I recognize your posting style. You're starting to sound a little obsessed. Did you register with a fake address and now you're starting to panic or something? [ Reply | More ]

np: funny, I could say the same about you. or any of the others that sound like you. totally crazy, IMO. oh, and we got into a citywide, so no reason to hate you other than the fact that you sound like a new twist of the story the lottery. go stone people in your dreams, not irl [ Reply | More ]

no one was talking to you crazy egomaniacal citywide mom. the post was addressed to op. if you think you're impressing anyone with the fact that your dc is in a citywide or that you once read a shirley jackson story in your freshman ap english class, you're not. nor does your hyperbole equating the consequences of cheating the system with a public stoning. gl with all the nest crazies. you should fit right in. nnp: Now you are going to attack NEST every time someone mentions "a citywide?" You don't need a new hobby, you need medication. [ Reply | More ]

I have said it all along, everyone knows that the problem with PS199 is the huge amount of new construction in the zone that has brought so many new families, not cheaters. [ Reply | More ]

the bill thompson report called "growing pains" addresses the overcapacity in nyc schools by district. pretty interesting reading if you can get through it. [ Reply | More ]

Seriously. We moved into our apt 4.5 years ago and DD was the only child in this 23 unit building, which was newly residential. There are now 3 kids her age, 2 our younger DD's age, and a good 6 - 7 between 1 and 3. There are now a handful of big new buildings close enough to fall into our zone, and if they all opt to go public as we did, I don't know where the school will put them. [ Reply | More ]

don't worry. NYC has plenty underutilized schools. They just have to redraw the zoning maps and everything will be okay. There is a proposal about this somewhere. [ Reply | More ]

nah, that would be insane. PS 217 on Roosevelt Island, for example, is one of those underutilized schools. It makes a lot of sense to reduce the burden on PS 116, for example, and send some East midtown children to Roosevelt Island instead. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, but it won't necessarily satisfy UMC people. My zone is filled with gorgeous, expensive townhouses and buildings and then about 6 projects. Guess what the population looks like? [ Reply | More ]

so what? nobody is entitled to go to a certain public school. Some schools are overcrowded many are not. Let's spread the load a bit. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not really worried -- we're the only ones in our building using the PS system and I bet the ratios in the others will be similar... My point was more the population explosion in areas that were commercial and become residential. [ Reply | More ]

Well, in truth, the fault is not just with Bloomberg. NYC schools have been short changed by Albany for years. [ Reply | More ]

Sure, but it's only obvious in hindsight. It's hard to tell what the demographics of new buildings will be and even if the DOE wanted to build new schools, where would they put them? [ Reply | More ]

I disagree, most of these buildings have 2+ BR apartments, plus they're going up in densely populated neighborhoods. Look what's happening around E. 86th street or the Trump bldgs. on RSB, and even if these buildings weren't bringing in lots of families, they are still bringing in more people to an already crowded area with an overburdened infranstructure. The West 72nd St. IRT station was crowded and dangerous pre-Trump. [ Reply | More ]

And you're right, it's not just Blooomberg, Guiliani approved all of those Trump buildings, which the neighborhood tried to fight. [ Reply | More ]

I am the Devil's Advocate for today so: And done what? Post 9/11 everyone was stressed that the city was gonna go down the shitter. Granted, in 2008 that looks silly but for a while it seemed like it could go either way. One way they saw to turn things around was green light a lot of construction and get money (and UC/UMC people) coming back to the city. To make new construction dependent on new schools would have kept a lot of those projects from happening. [ Reply | More ]
