Where would you look for a "granny nanny"? That's what I had as a kid - she was wonderful and became part of our family till she passed when I was 12. Between all the scary nanny posts, and watching my grandmother's home health care aides, I'm off the standard route. I'd need someone 3 days/week starting in Oct, which might be good P/T work for a retiree. Thoughts? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think a retired teacher could be a good bet. Can't say where to find one though.... [ Reply | More ]

OP: ITA, and you just described my mom! But she's occupied watching my grandmother, and I don't expect her to take on that responsibility unless she'd be planning on going and getting a job anyway. [ Reply | More ]

Not sure how to find one, but I see a few families have little old Italian women for sitters (I live in Carroll Gardens, guess they are just from the neighborhood). We are going to need a nanny next year, I was thinking of asking at my doctor's office - he always has a waiting room full of older Italian women. They remind me of my own Italian grandma. we have a pt nanny who has been with us 5 yrs now-she was our cleaning lady and when dc was born, we asked her for more hours. she is like part of our family-she housesits for us when we travel (even recently handled the death of our goldfish while we were gone and clenaed out our fridge so we didn't come home to smelly old milk). my 2nd dc's first word was her name. My grandmother was my nanny growing up, and my mother is my dc's nanny. This is just ideal, IMO. But not popular in American culture. [ Reply | More ]

Would be great for me too, but unfortunately, my grandmother, who was the most amazing person I've ever known, is no longer coherent. She requires 24 HR care and my mom spends all her time watching her. [ Reply | More ]
