Want to plan a fun family vacation before ds starts K, but feel like it may be too late to book anything in August. Where can we got for $2000 or less (from NYC)? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm going to Bar Harbor (Acadia National Park) in August. You can rent a cottage (with kitchen) there for less than $800 a week. If you drive (long though: about 9 hours) you can easily do it for under 2K. If you fly to Bangor, it will cost you about 300 a piece, round trip, so you will end up over 2K, but maybe not by too much. [ Reply | More ]

I'm not staying in one of the cottages. I'm paying too much to stay in a place in town, but it's just me and ds, and I wanted to be able to walk to places. Check out this sight: http://www.barharborinfo.com/lodging_frame2.html. DS is most excited that we will go whale and puffin watching.... [ Reply | More ]

^^^by the way, Bangor is a little more than an hour from Bar Harbor. You'd have to rent a car at the airport, although with discounts it's not so much up there. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I'm really looking forward to it. First real vacation I've taken since ds was born. (For 5 years I've spent about $100 and visited my parents.) [ Reply | More ]

YEP--that's about exactly the kind of vacations we do as well. Sigh. Bar harbor is but a memory. [ Reply | More ]

It's my overpriced birthday present to myself. (I've got a big one coming up.) We probably won't go anywhere for another decade! [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. The climb might be a little much for my ds, but we're definitely hiking, biking and having a few (early) nights out! [ Reply | More ]

The odds of any one island being hit by a hurricane in any given season are pretty small. Most hurricanes never make landfall. Regardless, you buy the insurance. I [ Reply | More ]

No, that's cheesy. Maybe you can rent a place in Spring Lake (the train goes there) or Ocean Grove (a little weird but oddly likeable) and go to the honkey tonk towns for a day for fun. I also LOVE the Adirondacks. You can rent a cabin for $1,000, but you also need a car. [ Reply | More ]

- The trip insurance off-season route does not sound bad to me though. I've been to Florida in August and lived. You just swim a lot and you have your pick of restaurants. [ Reply | More ]

OR: I now own a home in Spring Lake, but let me tell you, my K kid would much rather vacation in Wildwood Crest (which is also a dry town, like OG, BTW). It is fun and family friendly. And the motels and condos all have pools. The boardwalk and water parks are a blast. [ Reply | More ]

Okay, here goes again. I've got a rental available in Cape May, N.J. at a reduced rate. The last 3 weeks are available. Cape May is perfect for families and all. We'd booked it but it's back-Families and couples only, please. Here's the link( the price is slightly reduced from listed). http://www.simonecolina.com/quad/ [ Reply | More ]
