Depends on your private school and public school choices. Depends on whether you really want a second home. My dc goes to public school but I really don't want a second home, for example. [ Reply | More ]

1st home in the burbs and public school. Great education and we won't spend 4 hours of every weekend driving. [ Reply | More ]

no, but my guess is that one or both of you spend *at least* that much time commuting during the week. [ Reply | More ]

yes, one dh commutes 7 1/2 hrs a week (45 mins each way). So I guess that breaks down to an extra 3 1/2 hrs of travel for one person each week vs all 5 of us spending 4 hours a week in the car (which is actually 20 people-hours)....I think it's a pretty even trade. I finally decided that if living in Manhattan was so great, why does everybody try to leave (or wish they could) the minute the weekend rolls around? [ Reply | More ]

See post above (2nd OR). Many of us don't leave and don't want to. [ Reply | More ]

I think there are pros raising a family in the suburbs, but I think that weekend story is silly. You might want to get out about five to eight weekends of the year, but if you live in the suburbs, you might want to get in to the city for the theater, special occassion dinners, museums, Christmastime, etc. [ Reply | More ]

You are absolutely right...I guess what prompted our decision is that our boys don't care for theater and museums. They consider a trip to the AMNH a torture session. They want to play baseball, soccer and swim and as they get older, the small fields scattered here and there in manhattan aren't cutting it anymore. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, this is happening to a friend that loves the city. Her son wants to play baseball in the apartment. Many people are unnecessarily dramatic about the suburbs on this board. A large part of it has to do with finding as good a fit as possible. [ Reply | More ]

A 45 minute commute from the burbs to work in Manhattan? I smell a commuter's lie. [ Reply | More ]

private school. its benefits will last a lifetime and you don't have to worry about pipes freezing and which house you left the olive oil or your favorite sweater at. [ Reply | More ]

If you can't afford olive oil or a favorite sweater at BOTH residences, you can't afford the 2nd home. [ Reply | More ]

In my world, since we are in a great public school, I would do the second home - but only if it was out of the country and someplace the children would get wonderful cultural and language experiences. My mother's family is still in Italy, I would love to have a second home there, I think the benefits of summers traveling and learning about the breadth of opportunities in the world would be great. I honestly just don't want either that badly (I have mixed feelings about both), but I do feel strongly that retirment savings (so your kids are not burdened) and then private school. [ Reply | More ]

That depends entirely on the child, the public option, and the private option. If the public option is Hunter or Anderson, pick the second home. If the public option is PS6 and the kid would be fine in a big class, then I'd pick the second home. If the public option is PS6 and the private option is Trevor/CGPS/Town, I'd pick the second home. If the public option is 158 and the private option is Spence or Collegiate, I'd pick the private school. You get the idea. [ Reply | More ]
