Pissed. A friend just gave me a sancti speech when she found out I had bought an Edison bulb for an antique fixture that I have (it puts out less light for the energy use than a regular bulb, but gives off a really nice glow). She said I should care more about the environment than how nice the light looks. ONE BULB. It took so much effort not to ask her the exact carbon footprint of all flights for the many vacations she takes. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

wow, it surprises me how easily friends can come and go according to people on this board. [ Reply | More ]

i keep my friends for a long time, but something like that... i'm not sure, it's something you could argue with her about if she's a good friend, tell her how annoying and rude and judgemental it was and maybe she'll back off. but there's something just wrong about that, so if you're already ready to ditch her, maybe this is the sign. np: my close friends would never do a PITA thing like that though. [ Reply | More ]

We used to be close, but really ever since I had kids she has been sniping about all my lifestyle choices. The bulb thing is a little thing compared to comments about my DH and how I'm raising my kids, but I guess it is the last straw because it's just so darn petty to get on my case about it. np: well, if it's the last straw then so be it. some times people just drift apart and have different values. Stop investing in the friendship and see if it continues. [ Reply | More ]

I guess I just dislike that she thinks all my values are "less" values than hers. [ Reply | More ]

Everyone is like that about their own stuff. (Just she is wrong.) [ Reply | More ]

OP: Yeah, we've actually BTDT - one burst for no reason in my closet, it was a fortune to get everything dry cleaned! Ours was uncovered, but it turns out you aren't supposed to use them in a closed fixture because of the heat as well. Now I get the kind with that has a regular bulb glass that covers the fluorescent loops - less likely to release the mercury if a coil breaks. [ Reply | More ]

Interesting. I had never heard of not using them in closed fixtures. I usually buy the covered ones for aesthetic purposes, but that makes a lot of sense, plus I bet if you drop them the out cover will shatter but it may keep the coil from doing so as well. [ Reply | More ]

np: that's odd - think of how many kitchens in older homes have those long tube florescent bulbs with a cover over them. [ Reply | More ]

fluorescents don't give off heat. [ Reply | More ]

wait a second... if you break one of those compact fluorescent bulbs it is thousands of dollars to clean it up? WTF? [ Reply | More ]

If you call the hotline, I think that they tell you it isn't that big of a deal, but I had a friend that it happened to, and she got the room tested, it was at twice the recommended level. [ Reply | More ]

Listen, I am all kinds of eco-friendly (compost, drive Prius, etc) and I totally use edison lightbulbs because they simply give off nicer light. There are some sacrifices I choose not to make. Your friend is ridic. [ Reply | More ]

In blind tests, the light given off by CFL and incandescent bulbs is no different! [ Reply | More ]
