Why do so many of you HATE the G&T moms (especially Anderson moms?) I have a 2 year old so i am not yet investigating this yet. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

The ones I know (whose dc's go to Anderson and Lower Lab) are really competitive and constantly comparing their dc's school to the tt privates. They think their dc's are the most intelligent dc's in the city. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter has the exact type of parent. they are just less impulsive about airing their business publicly. they all just smile in a low key way, and say everyone was qualified who made 2nd round. that graciousness provides them with a whole lot of latitude. they are pardonned! [ Reply | More ]

also, i think because they are not DOE, they are less likely to identify with the "we the people" mentality of most public school moms. Less likely to feel they are the center of the universe and of NYC politics. [ Reply | More ]

Oh please, every school has nut job parents. Most are normal. [ Reply | More ]

Its a bad year to get an anderson accept. so much controversy over DOE changes, and the negativity has been focused on this one school in the system. I think it was nest in years past. [ Reply | More ]

The negativity exists only on UB. [ Reply | More ]

My advice: form your own opinion. I almost let the negative hype keep me from sending ds to NEST last year. The parent body there is nothing like what is described on UB. Nothing. [ Reply | More ]

That's just nonsense. This is a very small group of petty women with no lives who are creating this issue. Most people in NYC, even parents, have not heard of Anderson or Nest - just as most adults without children (other than those living on the UES) haven't heard of Chapin or Spence or even Dalton. I'm sure the parents at the G&T schools are not that different from those at TT or Gen Ed public school or even special ed schools - some will be active others will never show their faces, some will be snotty others will be friendly. The public schools will have more diversity, the private schools may have more resources, but not necessarily. The kids will not be too different. IGNORE THE HYPE. [ Reply | More ]

OR: That was my point, "form your own opinion." But in fairness, if you were new at all this stuff and doing research about schools last year, NEST -- especially after that NY magazine article -- would have looked suspect. [ Reply | More ]

Last year I was surprised that some people bought into the bad press and turned down Nest spots. That article that came out reported on events that were over a year old so it wasn't really relevent at the time. Personally, I was really happy that the article came out when it did. My DC was waitlisted for the school and I think the article helped him getting into the school once the waitlist opened up. I know one parent from my district who turned down a spot for her dc stating the "competitive parents" thing. It couldn't be further from the truth. Everyone I met was really laid back. Even if it was like that, I wouldn't know it, I am too busy minding my own business. [ Reply | More ]

I could not agree more. But I do find that waving as the kids march past the window thing a little odd. [ Reply | More ]

Thank god the kids in first grade march in the other direction and we won't have to stand there waving to them anymore. I will be able to get work 10 minutes sooner. [ Reply | More ]

NP: I am - what is this? Also - can you ask another question? What happens at recess in the way of security? I was a little surprised to see the gates wide open with no one really "manning them", when I went to register DC for K. There were a lot of the little ones out (had to be K or first, not much older), and only one or two adults that I could see. do you know if this is normal? Seemed like it would be so easy for someone to just come in and snatch a kid. TIA! [ Reply | More ]

Recess- Sounds about right. There is staff there. I've never felt uncomfortable about that space. The earlier post is about drop off. The kids play till the bell is rung, then they line up and the teachers come and collect their class. They then go up the closest stairs which means a minute later they walk past a bunch of windows on the second floor which overlook the courtyard. Many K parents stand in the courtyard and wave to their kid as s/he walks by to class. [ Reply | More ]

I never did that. I didn't have the time and I don't think it mattered to my dc. [ Reply | More ]
