Do you think it is fair for one child with a serious peanut allergy to dictate what the entire school eats for lunch? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I know this is not PC, but no, literally one child, no. But I doubt there is only one child with allergies. [ Reply | More ]

yep, dd's school is in the process of moving to be a nut free school it's not that big of a deal for us as she is not allergic. imagine what it would be like for you to have to worry every single minute that your child might be exposed to something that could kill him or her. btw my dd [ Reply | More ]

last year this little girl held hands with another boy from class to walk to library. He had eaten cheese Doritos and she swelled up and had to be epi-penned. Seriously, how much dairy could there even be in a Dorito. It's terrifying for her family. [ Reply | More ]

NP: The OR is trying to be offensive, but I think the overall question is a valid one. If you are the parent of a severely allergic child, how much of the burden of accomodating your child's allergy can you reasonably and comfortable switch to your school or to other parents? Not sending PB&J is one thing - easy enough for parents to do and easy enough for the school to spot if the parents don't comply. But if you start talking about reading labels for all food products or needing to wash other DC hands/brush their teeth if they have contact with peanuts at home, there's a possiblity that even a "caring and involved" parent makes an innocent mistake that ends up hurting your child. You are so wrong...at nut free schools parents do read labels to help out a dc with life threatening allergies. Anything I miss comes homes with a note from the teacher. [ Reply | More ]

if the allergies are that life threatening than they should not be somewhere that could not possibly be monitored closely enough. i do not think you should dictate what an entire school of children should eat. what if someone is a vegetarian and they have nuts as a regular part of their diet? Kids with that kind of allergy need to be in a sep. facility. Both to avoid the issues their presence brings but also to ensure their safety - I wouldn't want to count of all those other people for my kids safety. [ Reply | More ]

It has actually been blown way out of proportion. Deadly peanut allergies are extremely rare, but most people don't know the difference b/t a mild one and a severe one so err on the side of caution. That said, the deadly variety do exist, so if most people do overreact to dc's allergies some do not. It really is not that big of a deal not to pack PB & J. [ Reply | More ]

not to mention the fact - where does it end? What about the kids with egg/wheat/soy allergies? What about kids that are diabetic? What about kids that are immuno-suppressed? By the time kids are in school (grade school, that is), the child should know what they can/cannot eat. [ Reply | More ]

the biggest difference is that nut allergies are more likely to be airborne. and peanut butter is more likely to stick on kids' hands. and peanut and tree nut allergies are more likely to have severe reactions than egg, wheat, soy and other allergies. [ Reply | More ]

Yes and No. I mean at what point do you "stop!" I work at a private school and we accomodate EVERY illness/allergy. But we had someone complain early in the year that they had a pepper (as in seasoning) allergy and asked that we do not serve or cook with it - GIVE ME A BREAK! Unless the very smell of something could potentially kill you (which I know a peanut allergy could entail). It's tough and I'm not sure what the answer is! [ Reply | More ]

Lately I feel schools accomodate peanut allergies more than any thing else. If your kid was in wheel chair the school wouldn't spend the $$ to make the school wheel chair accessable. If you child was blind or deaf they would tell you we can't handle that here. ADHD and not on meds. SEE YOU LATER. but a peanut allergy is this big PC thing to get behind. [ Reply | More ]

Move to Oregon if your kid has a disability.... we have really accomodating ADA policies. The whole school would be ADA accessible to begin with, before anyone even needed it to be. Haven't heard quite so much about peanuts though, so I guess its not the place for you if you have that problem. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is fair to require that the claims be documented and the kids be retested regularly. If the child is really so severely allergic that mere exposure could be fatal, than of course ban peanuts. [ Reply | More ]

1. this child is not dictating what they eat for lunch. she is dictating what they don't eat for lunch. 2. i don't know about fair but it is necessary. schools are required to provide safe environments. the same way they need ramps for wheelchair students. what i'm curious about is what's going to happen when there's a generation of highly allergic adults. I know a child with a life-threatening milk allergy who got raised welts on his leg when another child's yogurt splattered on his pants when she was opening it. Fortunately this type of serious allergy is rare. I think the policy in all schools should be that children are aware and respectful of all of the dietary restrictions of all the children in the classroom so everyone can participate. That means, to me, that children be sure to eat their own lunches and children with pb sandwiches wash their hands after lunch of there is a nut allergic child or if there is a severely nut allergic child who can't be around pb fumes then everyone in the class agree to refrain from pb sandwiches. It also means no ham during the Green Eggs and Ham day if there are kosher or strict muslim children in the class, no pizza parties if there are milk allergic children in the class and no turkey on thanksgiving if there are vegetarian children. I am actually being sincere about this and not snarky. One year for my ds' bday party there were two kids who--put together--had allergies to everything and I brought to school Italian ices instead of cupcakes and all the kids loved it. I think children should be taught to eat their own lunches individually and that group food should be a communal activity in which all can participate. [ Reply | More ]
