HELP! Bought a house that needs a total overhaul. Having floors sanded/refinished. Where do I start with painting the rooms? Was hoping to get it done in 6 weeks before we move in but I feel totally overwhelmed. Should I get the rugs/furniture first? I don't know where to begin. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If you want to start w/ paint, try the Benjamin Moore Affinity colors (in the Aura formulation). They all work together, so it's pretty fool proof. If you want specific color suggestions let me know--we did this fairly recently. [ Reply | More ]

For the ceilings do the room color at half. Are the rooms open to each other or are their natural break points? [ Reply | More ]

there is a kitchen/great room that is one big room with no break point, then on the other end of the kitchen, an arch into the dining room and then on another wall of the dining room an archway into the family room [ Reply | More ]

there are french doors and pillars separating the kitchen/dining room and dining room/living room. I think I'll have to keep those whitish I guess to separate the rooms. This is going to be a disaster [ Reply | More ]

Where the archways are you get a break point, so you could do colors that relate but aren't the same. What type of colors do you like? What's your style. In our home we did a blue-green in the living room, chocolate brown in the dining room (w/ white wainscoting), pale butter yellow in the kitchen. In the family room and all hallways we used a very pale neutral w/ a hint of green. [ Reply | More ]

I was thinking a yellow for the kitchen...dh wants a bold color in the dining room but there are no actual windows in the dining room so I think it is going to be way to dark ...I'm picturing greens, yellows and blues but just don't know how to put it all together. So you did a different color ceiling in each room too? [ Reply | More ]

Yep, each ceiling is the wall color cut in half w/ white--or you can take it down farther than that. We used mostly the Affinity colors but I did go with Restoration Hardware Buttercream for the kitchen--very pretty yellow. I'd say in the dining room I'd go for either a green or a warm color--if the room doesn't get much light. I think red is really overdone, but it does work in a traditional dining room. Blue makes the food look funny. [ Reply | More ]

Also, you might find it helpful to get the Affinity fan deck to start working with. It's only about 150 colors so way fewer choices (which is a good thing). And they do all work together. One thing is that the paint formulation is more expensive, but it doesn't emit the chemicals, etc (it's healthier). [ Reply | More ]

thank you so much for this. I'm going to start with the affinity then...I definitely need less choices, not more! [ Reply | More ]
