We got shut out from privates, but got anderson. not really happy about it, believe it or not. all these people here fighting about the school, and we wish we were going to a great private in the fall. anyone else out there? i feel we are the envy of all the public school crowd, but will be the focus of ridicule among our peers. wish I could be happier. Hoping to apply out the following year. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You are not the only one. There is a contingent at Anderson that would rather be in private but either did not get in or can't afford it, and gripes about stuff kids of their friends in private have and Anderson lacks. So you'll find some friends there. [ Reply | More ]

Ridicule? Your peers suck. Get some new peers; that ought to go a long way toward making you happy. [ Reply | More ]

they would never do it openly, but I know how they think. Only some applied to public at all, and some of them didn't tell but a few people...not even psd. [ Reply | More ]

maybe I should have left out the focus of ridicule part. but seriously we wanted dc to be at a great private. didn't say TT, although my 2 favorite schools would be classified that way. we just wanted private. not really about my friends. I am just sort of unhappy about it all. [ Reply | More ]

There are only 50 dc starting Anderson in the fall. How many of those 50 will apply out for K? Not many. And I am betting that this OP's dc is a summer b-day, so that narroews it down even more. Someone is bound to figure out who this OP is. [ Reply | More ]

Very hard to apply out from Anderson, especially next year w/ all the doubts circling around the fairness of the admissions process. "Anderson" doesn't always mean "Smart" in admissions circles anymore. [ Reply | More ]

OR is full of it, but applying out of Anderson is not easy for other reasons. They are not happy to have people start going on private visits as soon as they set the foot in the school, so you will get no support. OP better kiss up to the teacher big time to get decent report. They have no desire to help you. [ Reply | More ]

np: ITDA! Anderson will not go against people who don't want to be there. why would they? Different people make different choices, and it will free up a spot for someone who wants it. They have nothing to lose. [ Reply | More ]

They will not go against you but they will not do anything to help. And if you apply to a lot of school and dc misses a lot of school for interview they will be pissed as it screws up attendance. [ Reply | More ]

The teacher will spend half hour on it, that's it. No elaborate process to fine tune it like preschools have, and if you manage to piss off the teacher before then it will be mediocre at best. [ Reply | More ]

What support do you want. Hand holding? Consultations on what private school would be best for your dc? Public school guidance counselors aren't trained for private school consulting. In the few instances when a family wanted to apply to a private school (usually in later elementary years), guidance counselors always arranged for recommendations, transcripts - what they're supposed to do. And kids always got in, but didn't always go there. [ Reply | More ]

i'm really sorry for you that you see your child's school as nothing but a status symbol to be envied or ridiculed. too bad you can't focus on your CHILD and what might be best for him or her and how to make it a positive experience. with your attitude, your child is going to be miserable his whole life. You are not alone. We have friends who are going to Hunter and Anderson and are unhappy because they were shut out of the private TT. Don't know your background but many people who went to private TT are more aware of what they are missing out on at H and A and are unhappy. Academically TT is superior and obviously the extras and environment is more pleasant. BUT dcs at H and some at A are very bright so even if the teachers and curriculum cannot live up to say spence, chapin, collegiate etc. dc will do well! GL! [ Reply | More ]

How much of your friends' and your own reaction is snobbery adn how much is because you think a private school experience is better. I can tell you that your child will learn just as much or more at Anderson than at a second tier private. My impression is that the atmosphere at private is nicer and more appropriate for young children than the atmosphere at public. If your child is sensitive, that could be a problem. If your child is "normal," it won't be a problem. I would ignore anything you read about the parents on this board. It's a very skewed perspective. [ Reply | More ]
