Only that they have changed the school week. Longer days 4 days a week. This makes the transport much easier on everyone. [ Reply | More ]

interesting. I would have thought that perhaps with the Internet, they would offer more classes online. Is your hometown (if it was a town!) now more or less populated than it was when you were a kid? [ Reply | More ]

Very few homes have internet. Even now. I remember when phone service wasn't available (we used radios) and cell phones are still pretty useless. It's not like NYC where the infrastructure is in place. The town was about 1500 people when I lived there. I think it is about the same now. [ Reply | More ]

Seldom. Very expensive and very time consuming. The flight to Anchorage is the fastest part of the trip! [ Reply | More ]

I grew up in Alaska. The nearest school was quite far, and there aren't roads between the towns. So you took an air taxi to school. The teachers did the same. [ Reply | More ]

Did you board at the school then? I can't imagine flying to and from school every day [ Reply | More ]

Yes. It wasn't quite like school buses. But there was a large field behind the school (one building for K-12) where the planes would take off and land. Pilots made a nice living taking people to work and school in the AM, doing deliveries during the day, then taking people home in the afternoon. [ Reply | More ]

So you did or you did not board at the school? (meaning stayed overnight during the week) [ Reply | More ]

I went home every afternoon. It was a public school, not a boarding school. [ Reply | More ]

Did you have drinks service on the plane, like a regular plane (back when airlines had customer service, that is) [ Reply | More ]

No, no, no. Forget commercial flights. This is an air taxi. Very different. Very utilitarian. [ Reply | More ]

What would you do if there were no schools in your town and you couldn't drive to school? [ Reply | More ]

I was just thinking the school must be quite a distance and seems more practical to stay at school for three, four nights. The expense of flying back and forth must be enourmous [ Reply | More ]

But where are you going to stay? And who is going to supervise? It's not like you can send a 6 year old off to first grade with an overnight bag and tell them to camp out in the cafeteria overnight. [ Reply | More ]
