ok seriously - what are your best strategies for getting through the terrible threes? We spent the weekend with the IL's and DD was a terror! She screamed at the top of her lungs every time she did not get her way, fought with her cousins and was basically a total brat! What happened to my sweet little girl? Help! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

structure, schedule, limits. It is harder when you are not at home, but you have to try to stick with it. [ Reply | More ]

we do all that though. I can't figure out what we are doing wrong. We do time outs when she screams or fusses, don't give her what she wants unless she asks nicely etc etc. Nothing is working. It's getting worse if anything and I feel like a complete failure here. Sigh [ Reply | More ]

but if she doesn't, she gets really tired and cranky. I'm working her into quiet time as she gets older. If she falls asleep that's great, if not, that's ok too. She needs some down time though. My sis's 5yo still naps FWIW. I think some kids do need it [ Reply | More ]

maybe she's looking for attention? on some level she's getting something out of the reaction she's able to provoke in you. try responding with as much calm as you can muster - while delivering consequences every time she misbehaves. and tell her you love her despite her behavior. hard stuff. good luck! I have thought about that and I do try to stay calm (sometimes with more success than others!) I think she gets plenty of attention. I SAH and we do lot's of things together - art projects, playground, baking etc. She stays with her grandparents 1 day a week (I just started a 1 day a week job) and she loves them and has fun with them. I just don't know what's up. Sigh [ Reply | More ]

are you and DH consistent in your approach with her? are grandparents? meaning, is schedule same/similar, are consequences and rule same? [ Reply | More ]

DH and I are pretty close - usually when one of us has had it, the other one can step in. Gp's spoil her. They keep her schedule pretty well although I think she stays up a little later at their house. But with it being one day a week I didn't think that would make a huge difference. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know - with mine it would have made a difference. You can't stop them from doing things differently, but that may be contributing to her behavior. gl. keep w/your routine and she will outgrow it...mine did... [ Reply | More ]

maybe that is what is doing it - I hate to blame the grandparents though! They are doing me a huge favor and she loves being with them. They do cater to her whims more than I do of course and put up with/fuss over tantrums etc much more than I do. But I feel like they are the grandparents and it's their job to spoil her. SIgh. When did yours outgrow this? ;-) [ Reply | More ]

LOL! Ok - deep breaths! We will keep trying. IT makes me so sad though that I don't enjoy her that much right now. I look forward to teh days when the ILs have her so I can have some peace. I feel like a horrile mother saying that. [ Reply | More ]
