SOOOOOOO tired of all the sour grapes G&T posts. Yes, the OLSAT is flawed, yes testing a 4 yo for Giftedness is crazy, but it is what it is. Some of us got VERY lucky and our dc had a great test day, some of us did not. Yes some of us got lucky and got our first choice school, some of us did not. Life is not always fair. it does suck but what can you do? I am just very tired of seeing all of this negative talk about schools which before placements/scores came out people were dying to send their dc to. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

dc headed to anderson. we are thrilled. GL to everyone. we lucked out and are grateful. our dc is actually the kind of kid who needs differentiated education, and we are hoping the school will be great for him. It has been a long haul. I am sure there are people out there who did not have the same good fortune...those with truly gifted kids who will not have this opportunity this year. we feel for them. nonetheless, I am tired of never being able to show that I am truly happy that my kid caught a break. oh, jesus. you know at age 4 your dc needs "differentiated education"? you are pathetic. truly. i really don't need you to feel for me. honest. my dc scored a 98 and will do just fine at a great gened. so eff you. [ Reply | More ]

np. You sound pathetic, insecure and bitter. For some dc it is obvious even at 4 they won't be well served in a general ed classroom. I doubt you'd react this way if it was someone with a SN dc w/ an IQ of 65 saying how grateful they were for dc to get into an appropriate program. [ Reply | More ]

I think it's just a few posters who simply cannot seem to "move on" because the process ended up catching them by surprise. ITA that this place has become dominated by those posters, who have created a very negative, sniping atmosphere. It will fade very soon and be replaced by the frenzy of post-Labor Day phone calls, then who is the best SB5 tester, then ongoing applications, then G&T all over again. [ Reply | More ]

I actually think the private school moms have left UB. Have never seen such a focus on public school before. [ Reply | More ]

The private school moms will be back with a vengeance in the fall. It's always been cyclical on NY Schools, according to the admissions calendar. Maybe there's more focus on public because of the DOE's increasing centralization, plus the demographics (more public school families than ever before)? [ Reply | More ]

You should read the comments on the insideschools blog. There is a lot of DOE hate going around there. It is insane! At some point there was a woman calling others to gather at her apartment becauce NBC was supposed to come and interview about how the DOE failed them. [ Reply | More ]

That might have been about the pre-school fiasco, and frankly, those people had some very legitimate complaints and I think getting the media involved is a very smart move in that situation. Compared to the preschool situation, the G&T process went pretty well overall. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, I understand that part. But the tone on insideschools in general is extremely "DOE sucks". Even during the G&T process. Read some of the comments there. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know. I would be pretty upset if I never got my dc's score and no one from the DOE returned my calls. I don't think that happened to lots of people, but I think there were a handful of people who were VERY poorly served by this process. [ Reply | More ]

and I bet those were the most PIA parents who could not stop calling/e-mailing the DOE folks. I had to get in touch with the DOE twice and both times somebody got back to me sooner or later. And that is the key: have some f'ing patience. [ Reply | More ]

You seem really hostile. I recall a mom who posted this very story on UB. She was patient, and apparently had a private school acceptance, so she wasn't desperate, but still, that sort of thing should just not happen. [ Reply | More ]

so true. we never tried contacting doe. just had dc tested, mailed in the form via regular mail, got our placement via courier, and voila! done. easy as pie! Could've turned out better in terms of placement, but we knew the odds going in. People are just crazy is all I can say. calling the doe about every little question and inconsistency, wringing their hands if someone doesn't get back to them immediately. I just don't know how these people live in the world with all that anxiety, anger and stress. They will not make it to age 60 with that approach. [ Reply | More ]

I was referring to the preschool admissions process, which the DOE completely mangled. All of us are entitled to a fair and open process, with appropriate accountability when the process fails. From what I could see, that never happened with the preschool process. [ Reply | More ]

They never accepted responsibility publicly! Instead they blamed the parents. Elected officials had to get involved to put some heat on the DOE. Come on! You can't seriously be arguing that the DOE handled the preK problems well. [ Reply | More ]

In the end they admitted that there was a problem with the sibling placement. They even gave a number how many families were impacted and they said that they would work with each family to find a solution. I have never heard anything back about the pre-K process since, i.e. it is more or less solved. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you somewhat. The G&T tracking is done way too early in a child's life here in NYC. As the OP said, though, it is what it is. If you hate the way it is being done you are always welcome to move somewhere else where the public education system is more in line with your thinking. [ Reply | More ]

this is my point! i dont live in nyc, i live in dubai where private schooling is the only option and is based on income. it is sick and disgusting. children should all get the same opportunities, there is enough pressure come university age, when history of schooling actually matters... NP. I'm not the NEST basher (whoever that is), but I do think it's kind of funny that OP feels sorry for everyone who didn't get in there. Maybe it's a great school, maybe not, but we didn't even rank it. It's just not for us. We felt this way after the tour btw and before the test results were announced. No sour grapes here, despite what OP seems to think. [ Reply | More ]
