I need advice for how to deal with my mil. She never says anything openly rude to me that she could be called out on, but she is very passive aggressive. for example, yesterday, when I told her that i have been reading a lot lately, she nodded her head and said that was great for me, but she doesn't have time to read, implying that i am lazy and sit around reading all of the time. when she saw me pout a glass of diet coke for myself, she, unprovoked, told me that she would never drink anything with aspartame in it. i could go on and on, but she does this constantly, and i think you all get the idea. i find myself making excuses to her, like a dumb ass. there has to be a better way to deal with her. i can never think of the right thing to say at the time. so, i am thinking maybe i should just ignore her? i'd appreciate any advice. What can you do, other than just ignore those comments? [ Reply | More ]

For the reading, I'd shrug and say, "oh. well it's a great book, I'm really enjoying it." For the Diet Coke, I'd say, "Great. More Diet Coke in the world for me." Don't make excuses to someone who is trying to belittle you. [ Reply | More ]

my mom had a relationship like this w/ her own mother. my mom could never take it any of the provocations, and always ended up looking like the bad guy because she would fight back when her mom made a snide remark. My uncles were far better at dealing w/ grandma, they just never get defensive, never apologize for something that required no apology and it kept her in her place with them. [ Reply | More ]

I'd respond, "So, you think I am lazy for having time to read?" [ Reply | More ]
