This weekend we received a copy of dc's transcript for the year from school (a K-12 private school my dc is leaving next term, as he has been admitted somewhere else for 9th grade). This past yr dc went through the admissions process for 9th (public and private). SHOCKED to see a "D" as a first term grade on the transcript, a clerical error (narrative report card sent in November directly to us had only very high grades). There was a second, more obvious clerical error (another grade was reported as "G" which was not one of the options). I am thinking through all the interviews we had in November and December, and imagining the admissions people wondering why we were not trying to do "damage control" relating to this supposed "D" in the first quarter report card. ISEE scores were all 8 and 9 stanines and letters of rec would have been consistent with terrific, hard working, great kid (which he is). Thankfully dc got into a school we love (for HS) but I am still quite shocked that this happened. I am so grateful to the school that admitted him for overlooking this bad grade (which was wrong) and admitting him anyway. Parents, MAKE SURE there are no clerical or other errors on your child's record when applying to schools or college. What really annoys me is I asked for a copy of the transcript but was refused it and told "wait for the report card, it has all the same information, plus the narrative descriptions of performance" (and incidentally the narrative part was not included in the transcript sent to the schools). Ouch. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I can't imagine they would do something like that (OP).That would be crazy. Anyway, he was admitted to Stuy (we chose to send him to private). The grade error would not have kept him out of Stuy in any case. [ Reply | More ]

np; which private is he going to? So, he was at a private for K-8 and you are switching him out of there for HS? I can see why they are peeved. To lose a smart dc who can boost their college exmissions. [ Reply | More ]

A lot of kids who start out at "lower tier" privates try to switch to TT HS. In UWS, there is only one TT HS. Trinity and they add A LOT of new students, some 60 kids, for HS who boost their college exmissions. I bet new HS kids help them more than kids who started out in LS there. [ Reply | More ]

Lots of kids switch schools for HS though, it is not a put down to any school. By HS kids know what their interests are, and many kids find a better fit by changing schools. [ Reply | More ]

If the private has HS, I can see why they're upset. if they're being counseled out, it's one thing but a A student trying to go to TT HS, it undermines the investment the school made for that dc when they accepted dc for Lower school. [ Reply | More ]

admission to Stuy is based on one test, which is taken by thousands of students in the fall, and then top scorers are admitted, very similar to Hunter admissions (for Hunter HS). [ Reply | More ]

do you think a school would dare do something like this deliberately? who would do it? it seems difficult to picture (someone sneaking in when nobody is looking to make the change). [ Reply | More ]

I am quite upset about it, but dh rightly points out there is nothing to be done, and we have to try to forget about it. Thank goodness our favorite school was able to look beyond one bad mark. We are SO grateful. [ Reply | More ]

Dh plans to request a corrected transcript be sent to the high school dc will attend. Maybe we will request corrected one be sent to all the schools where dc applied. I wonder if we should bother with that though. Maybe not. [ Reply | More ]

I probably wouldn't bother with the other schools as long as you are happy with the one you got. I would want to give one to his new school though. [ Reply | More ]

My dc's private school (preK-8) gives quarterly grades which are mailed. Sorry this happened to your child. [ Reply | More ]

So does mine, only there was a discrepancy between the grades we were sent and the ones they logged on the "official transcript" which was sent out to others. [ Reply | More ]

a k-8 school probably would have noticed though bc they actively seek to assist students in the hs placement process. Someone would have had a file for that student and would have been on top of all of it, and would likely have noticed something wrong on the transcript. In a K-12 there is no "process" for applying out, and certainly nobody has a responsibility to help or oversee the process for any child. Mistakes happen everywhere, but in a K-8 my guess is the problem would have been discovered. None of it is deliberate in any case. [ Reply | More ]

we asked but the person in charge said we needed to just wait for the report card, said the transcript "has to be signed" etc. etc. and it is a big job for her. Report cards were being issued within days anyway. I am sorry I did not ask to see a copy of what was sent to the schools but never would have guessed there could have been an error. Dh says "forget about it" and he is right. The only important thing is the outcome, which was terrific (dc admitted to a great school). Anyone can make a mistake, and we are lucky the outcome was good. Come to think of it, this is the first year they have sent out a "transcript" to parents at the end of the year. Previous years I only saw the quarterly narrative reports which had grades included. We were not even expecting the transcript in the mail. We might never have discovered the error at all (not that it really matters now, anyway). [ Reply | More ]
