Do you think Obama as the president will end affirmative action based on race? Do you think it will become affir. action based on poverty? I wonder if we end affi. action based on wealth. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No, I don't think he'll end aff action based on race, and I don't think he should. For affirmative action based on poverty, he'd also have to pay an awful lot of tuition. [ Reply | More ]

I think aff action based on race alone should end. if mixed with poverty, it should be in place. [ Reply | More ]

That is sort of assuming that there is no prejudice based soley on race to overcome. [ Reply | More ]

for college admissions specifically, yes. We should invest 10x for K-12 so we keep more kids in school and help them graduate. Those who already graduated enough to benefit from race alone AAction are doing okay compared to those who drop out of MS/HS. [ Reply | More ]

I mean there is no college that rejects applicants based on race alone. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think he will end it, but do think that he will make poverty more a factor as it should be. [ Reply | More ]

How do you make poverty a factor? Many colleges to some extent make income a factor by trying to admit people from different backgrounds, experience, and by expanding their financial aid funds. [ Reply | More ]

Same way you make race a factor - that would also mean setting up more federal programs to help those disadvantaged by poverty. [ Reply | More ]

I think affirmative action based on race should only apply to African Americans and Native Americans; people who were directly oppressed by the US government. [ Reply | More ]

Asian Americans were also directly oppressed by the US government - Asians could not become naturalized citizens until 1952 with the McCarren-Walter Act. There are a host of other instances as well. Hispanics have also been directly oppressed - that little war called the Mexican-American war. [ Reply | More ]

Didn't say it was, but plenty of state-sponsored and condoned hate-crimes against both and abuse of labor. [ Reply | More ]

Under your theory Jews should get affirmative action too. [ Reply | More ]

np; how do you define African American? Obama is not a descendant of slaves. More recent Jamaican immigrants/kids benefit from Aff Action at competitive colleges. How do you prove you are a descendent of a slave? No papers to prove. Won't work. [ Reply | More ]

There are always gray areas. What about wealthy, privileged, fair skinned "Hispanics"? They consider themselves "White" except when it comes to filling out college applications, then they become oppressed minorities. [ Reply | More ]

I know, and there are fair skinned, wealthy, privileged AAs (who really only have a drop of AA blood and look totally white) who claim AA box for college only. When you count who actually benefits from AAction, it's startling. [ Reply | More ]
