When you test 10,000 kids, statistically, 100 kids will be in the top 1% of IQ test. So, if DOE tested 50,000 kids, there should be 500 kids in the 99th percentile. That is, if you assume Olsat/bsra is a good IQ test. Anyway, if there were only 250 kids with 99th percentile, it's way fewer than predicted. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

But there were almost 450 for K alone and they didn't test 50,000 for K. It's a lousy test. [ Reply | More ]

That doesn't make sense to me. Fifty percent could have scored 99%. It could be any percentage. It's not the top 1% that scores 99%. The test was normed. [ Reply | More ]

There were only 11,000 4 year olds who were tested, not 50,000. [ Reply | More ]

So if 11,000 4 yos were tested adn around 450 scored 99 (whatever that 99 means), that means around 4% of the children tested scored in the top 1% of a projected norm. Whacky whacky. And no one is calling the DOE on their math or their thinking. Because all the mc and umc moms are too busy trying to get in THROUGH the system to question the system. With the SB, if your kid got a 99, it meant he or she had scored in the top 1% of all the kids in teh country taking the test in his or her particular age group. No one knows wht the numbers mean in the DOE system. [ Reply | More ]

I have always heard that the percentiles were based on national, not NYC, norms. I don't relaly understand what your overall point is. If you have been following UB/Insideschools, you will have seen PLENTY of criticism and questioning of this test & its administration, in the past 9 mos. [ Reply | More ]

You don't understand. The normed group was tested in the past. It's set. So 50% percent or 27% any percent could have scored 99% against the norm. Did you take math in school? It's not whacky. [ Reply | More ]
