Unless you can donate $500k/yr or whatever, I don't think you can buy your seat at a private school. There are enough wealthy people who can donate $10k-$20k/year in addition to tuition. If you have a dc who is very smart, doesn't bomb test/visit and the parents are normal, nice people (not PITA), dc will get accepted to TTs or runner ups (like ECFS, etc.). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

A dc with 98+ erb, no issues, no pita parents, who can pay their way gets shut out of top 15 schools? I don't think so. [ Reply | More ]

Nor do I. Btdt. Tt (fc) was no problem to get into. [ Reply | More ]

Ditto. I think the "parents not being PITAs" is a huge deal here. But also the 98+ erb is also. [ Reply | More ]

Dc's erb was higher than 98 (the score that gets flames) and we're not pitas (though psd clearly didn't like me--which convinces me further my dc's placement wasn't about me. At all.) [ Reply | More ]

Nobody thinks they're PITA. Nobody. I'd believe your PSD. [ Reply | More ]

LOL. You're misunderstanding. My kid GOT into tt. Not a pita at all, but psd didn't like me. [ Reply | More ]

Unless it's you (and perhaps even then) you have no idea about issues or pita status or even erbs (the one thing you KNOW for certain about your only YOUR kid. Unless you actually SEE other kid's reports, I think erb score claims are largely BS). [ Reply | More ]

Happened to a DC I know who had 99 and those stats. [ Reply | More ]

well then why does it seem so difficult to get in to these so-called TTs? [ Reply | More ]

There are only 7 TTs, but with a situation that I described, dc could get into top 15 (TTs and runner ups) if you FC correctly. [ Reply | More ]

Not always, look at this year. And if you need FA it is even less likely no matter how smart dc is and how nice you are. [ Reply | More ]

I agree FA is more difficult. If FA is needed, but still there are many, many families who get FA. Only 20% of applicants request FA, and many schools have 20% dc's enrolled who get FA, so I don't think it's more difficult. If you need 80%+ FA, maybe. [ Reply | More ]

np. Where are you getting that 20% number for applicants requesting FA? [ Reply | More ]

Most of the shut-outs from our Pre-K were high scoring, nice dc, with nice families who needed FA - several were told point blank that if they had not needed aid they would have moved from WL to accept. Also, FA awards are often broken down by division, meaning that 20% of students in the lower school receive aid, not 20% per grade. [ Reply | More ]

Most of the time, possibly true. But it sounds like there are plenty of shut outs every single year. [ Reply | More ]
