MOST RIDICULOUS POST OF THE DAY: It's difficult for any child to be so in the minority (white, black or latina) also because you've set up the "buffet" for them to shape their ideas of what is desireable as they mature and form their own sexuality even in elementary. My white gf who grew up in Paterson was conditioned to only find black guys sexually appealing, for example. That's also why black UMC educated in mostly white schools end up with mates that aren't black. It's an imprint from a young age.[ Reply | Options ] 07.05.08, 08:20 AM [ Flag | link to this post ] ^^If it's important to you that your child evenutually be with someone of the same ethnic background, consider his/her environment now. If it really doesn't matter to you, you don't have to weigh this in obviously.[ Reply | Options ] 07.05.08, 08:21 AM [ Flag | link to this post ] op:since we are concerned with this issue too, we have tried to expose our dc to more children from a similar background through afterschool activities and summer day camp. I thought about replying to that thread, but didn't. I went to an unusually diverse public system in the 60s and 70s. I did end up dating black and latino boys (I am white), and they generally treated me with much more respect than white boys, and they had to face wrath from their peers about dating me. My black boyfriend from HS was deeply conflicted, stuck between his working class parents and the pull of classmates who accused him of trying to be white. It was really hard for him.
