Increase the number of accelerated programs to accommodate all kids testing in the top 1% Eliminate all G&T for scorers below 99. Thereby increase intellectual diversity in general education and demand meaningful differentiation in heterogeneous classes. Reserve acceleration for the truly freakishly different child who, arguably, qualifies as special needs. Stop the middle class feeding frenzy! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Let me guess: Your 99 scoring dc didn't get into the citywide you wanted. [ Reply | More ]

Nope. 99.9% SB went to Anderson followed by 99.8% SB also went to Anderson. Selective middle schools and high school. Not sour grapes at all. Just seeing that there's a real problem with the 'gifted' label, which is only exacerbated by extending it further and further down the testing spectrum. I say that acceleration should be provided to those kids who will have real difficulty if they are mainstreamed. Fluent readers/writers doing some math at age 3 or 4 need a separate classroom. Everyone else can be accommodated along the gen ed continuum (except for those who need remediation and can't be mainstreamed either. [ Reply | More ]

99 is by no means the holy grail of anything, and most of these kids will do fine regardless where they are for elementary, considering they all have involved parents which is really the most important thing. Some may actually love being a star in a gen ed program. [ Reply | More ]

You forgot to mention that in order to do that you have to use a real IQ test that measures, as accurately as possible (e.g. SB, which has held up in litigation across the USA) for four-year-olds, unlike flimsy off-the-shelf tests like OLSAT which anyone; not a trained psychologist, can administer. DOE can't afford to pay for OLSAT for all kids, no way they can pay for SB. Not to mention there are not enough testers to administer it to 50,000+ kids either. [ Reply | More ]

Then it should go back to the old system - those than can afford to pay privately should and those that cannot, should be offered free testing. There can certainly be enough testers in NYC if they allow for staggered testing over a wider period than the 2-3 months it used to be, depending upon child's age at testing. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter tests 1000 kids a year and it's pretty hard to get appointment. 50,000 kids? And how do you think DOE will pay for the 45,000+ that will not pay themselves? I don't see it. Offering it free is one of few things with the new system that does make sense. [ Reply | More ]

don't forget weeding the slower kids out of gen ed so they don't hold everyone back. Oh, and any problem kids or different learners or behavior issues too. Put then all in the same class and label them "special" then we parents of smart kids don't have to see them anymore. [ Reply | More ]
