MIL and FIL have come to stay for ONE MONTH. Already she has taken over the kitchen and he is leaving newspapers all over the floor and they have only been here two days. DH seems oblivious. Any advice? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It is your house. Set the rules. "Dad/Fred, this is not your house. You can't leave your papers around." "Mom, I'd love some help in my kitchen, but we need to coordinate." (I would also suggest, if she is a good cook, this could be a learning experience.) [ Reply | More ]

LOL. And she is a great cook. But a month is a month. [ Reply | More ]

I assumed "set the calendar ahead two weeks" would not be viewed as helpful. [ Reply | More ]

Yes it was. They live a long way away. They are also both going a little deaf, so they speak very loudly. I have a 10-month DS who is teething, and they have already woken him up once. [ Reply | More ]

MY IL's are like this as well, but I remind myself that nothing is forever, and they will not be with us forever either. I try to be positive about what really is an intrusion on some level. [ Reply | More ]

You are right. The other thing that bugs me about it is my DH's attitude to my MIL. Yesterday she started cleaning the kitchen, and I think DH should have told her to stop. Even if she wants to clean (!!) she is still a guest in our house. DH was just sitting there with FIL, watching this 70-year-old lady stacking the dishwasher. WTF? [ Reply | More ]

A 70 year old can't stack dishes? She is your dh's mother--let her BE his mother for a month. Be a bigger person for 30 days. Your marriage will be better for it. [ Reply | More ]
