I think they are saving to buy a house - they are both very "frugal". So I need to write a check and I just have no idea what the number is supposed to be. [ Reply | More ]

That is tricky. We had a couple like that (mot family, exactly, but close) and we gave them one card for Home Depot (to renovate), one card to Williams-Sonoma (to stock the new kitchen) and one to Voctoria's Secret (to be funny). [ Reply | More ]

We were in a position to do $100 to each. She was our child's first babysitter, but there were connections with family as well. You may be in a diff position. I just didn't want to "donate" to a house, which is what they were preparing to buy as well. [ Reply | More ]

NP: That sounds awfully generous to me. I'd do $500. And I come from an Italian-American family accustomed to cash gifts. [ Reply | More ]

Now I feel like a cheapskate. Is $1000 a normal wedding gift ? [ Reply | More ]

I honestly don't know. It sounds like a nice round generous # but he is my only sibling... [ Reply | More ]

I'm going to tell myself that since this was five years ago and she was our babysitter, $300 wasn't totally cheap. Let me believe that. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think so. I have really rich relatives from CT (they all make at least 1 mil a year), and they all sent about about $300-$500 in gifts. I've never heard of $1000 in wedding gift/money. I was married 2 years ago. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like crazy money for someone making $100K. How are your finances. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. That's how much we make and there is no way I would give that much to my sibling. [ Reply | More ]

We gave my husband's brother $5K but we were in a position to do so at the time. Ironically, dh has since lost his job and while we are not poor in any sense, we are definitely more frugal now. $1K sounds good. [ Reply | More ]
