my ds is 17 months and circumcised....how do you clean his penis when it gets irritated. do you pull the skin down or just leave it alone? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

do you mean uncirc? If your child is circ there is no skin to pull down. If your child is uncirc, no - you do not retract the foreskin at 17 months. [ Reply | More

You should have an uncircumcised Pediatrician, or a least a foreskin friendly one. Best advice in general, is "leave it alone." Foreskins do NOT retract in newborns or young children, typically. (I have a 9 year old who can't retract, and a 6 year old who probably can. They might be 16 or so before full retraction is safely possible.) If it is irritated due to a mild infection, you can rinse with a mild saltwater solution, then water to get the salt out! You can use a squeeze bulb etc. to squirt gently. 2X day. My 9 year old had a mild infection, some pus under his foreskin, this fixed it in 2 days or so. [ Reply | More

Also, forcible retraction -usually by well intentioned adults- leads to tearing, scarring, adhesions and phimosis. Leaving it alone does not. The boy will likely sometimes pull his foreskin down (making the penis longer) and thus gently loosen the foreskin gradually and in stages. It DOES adhere to the glans for years, which protects the glans and the foreskin, keeps them moist and provides a barrier for infection, -like your mouth and nose do. Separating the two prematurely is a sure source of trouble and problems. Once he can retract by himself, a daily rise with plain water and a little rubbing are all that is needed to keep him clean.
