Personally, I think 116 is better than 6. I never saw the appeal of 6. [ Reply | More ]

116 seems to be going downhill fast. lots of grumbling from parents, mediocre report card. [ Reply | More ]

Great school, great community, and still fairly diverse. Very popular on UB for the G&T program, but the gen ed program is very strong w/ the same curriculum. Some of the best teachers elect to teach only gen ed to avoid th whole G&T vibe. Great test scores and kids get into competitive middle schools from the gen ed program. Only downside is all of the condos being built in the area is likely to cause a lot of overcrowding very soon, but not unlike all of the other desirable gen ed schools in NYC. Check out the PS116 website for more info. [ Reply | More ]

thank you! is it a nurturing environment? Are parents welcome during school hours to volunteer in class at all? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.04.08, 05:07 PM Flag

Very nurturing environment. Parents do no volunteer in official capacity except as class parents, but are often in the classroom. Reading Buddies and Math Buddies each once per month, lots of publishing parties, and can always offer to volunteer to come in for a special holiday or project, if so inclined. [ Reply | More ]

Its a drop off your child in the yard type school. Yes, you are invitied into classroom on occasion - but its always planned. Parental involvement is not as strong as other schools. Its a GOOD school! Good students, good teachers, good scores. Lucky to be moving into the zone. The g&t will be eliminated next year. [ Reply | More ]

I should qualify - parental involvement inside the classroom - the parent body is extremely involved. [ Reply | More ]

The District 2 plan calls for the elimination of the program at 116. Recommendation was made about a month ago. [ Reply | More ]

For some reason, there is no reply option after your post asking me how I know, so I'm replying to this one hoping it lines up. My dc is in the g&t program and I was told by a credible source. [ Reply | More ]

Why G&T will be eliminated? Because overcrowding and accomodate more gen. ed. DCs? In that case, D2 will have only LL, and 11(&130, 124). [ Reply | More ]

Yes, because of crowding. And taking it out of 116 doesn't mean that they won't put it in another program. D2 has LL, 124, 130, 11, and 111 (?) and 116 now. I think they might put one in 59 when the new building is done. [ Reply | More ]

np--Generally, I think G&T is added to a school to bring up the overall level of the school. I don't think PS 59 needs this. There are other schools in District 2 that might benefit--PS 1 is never mentioned as a district 2 school, for example. [ Reply | More ]

FWIW, PS116 used to allow drop-off in the class in K, and eliminated it 1-2yrs ago. Personally, I think it works out better since the class is able to get started on the morning routine much more quickly this way. [ Reply | More ]

np--I have a child in a school that allows parents in the classroom before class starts. Kids take turns ringing the bell that signifies it's time for parents to leave. Class starts right on time. [ Reply | More ]

My dd just finished K at 116. Your allowed in the class the first week and after that it is really easier to leave them in the yard. It is a big school and the parents get in the way of the other kids in the stairwell on days when they are in the classroom. It is not a big deal at all. [ Reply | More ]

what are the yearly PTA dues? [ Reply | More ]

Very low- ?20-40 dollars, but don't quote me on that. However, parents of K and 1st grade are encouraged to donate $600 per year to pay for a teacher's aide in each classroom. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. at all of the top schools, you are gently asked to do this. I think Nest's pta dues are pretty high, lower lab too. [ Reply | More ]

At LL, we are not so gently asked to donate about 950, regardless of whether or not we participate in the PA, and constantly urged to participate in all sorts of other fundraising throughout the year. We stay away from the PA folks but we give what we can when we can. Some give nothing, some give a lot more than we do. [ Reply | More ]

but that is the annual drive. not PTA dues. Every school has a suggested donation, no? There are no PTA dues at LL, not even gently asked. [ Reply | More ]

Every parent at PS116 is automatically in the PTA, but they send a flyer out which strongly encourages giving a donation to the PTA, in addition to other fund-raising and direct appeal during the course of the year. [ Reply | More ]

You're automatically a member of the PA but you can be asked for a voluntary contribution. That's what these "dues" are. Yes, that's not exactly teh correct meaning of the word, but it doesn't matter. [ Reply | More ]
