Any other non NY / Manhattan moms embarrassed and sad for the moms who seem to do nothing but scheme and dream of ways to get their children into Ivy league schools ? I wonder what would happen if the kids were actually allowed to apply to and attend the schools that interested them. I guess the stickers on the back of the cars wouldn't be as impressive... I'm a non US Mom living in NY and I'm amused by the chaos surrounding the schools process here. I totally understand parents wanting the best for their kids but it just all seems so nuts. [ Reply | More ]

I live in NYC and am puzzled by it. Way too much energy and ambition tied up in kindergarten. [ Reply | More ]

OP I think it's really so strange and almost pathological the obsession they seem to have to go IVY at all cost. My parents were Manhattanites (as is DH) but we now live in the South and I feel like I'm reading something that should be written about in psych journals. We all want the best for our kids, we all want them to succeed and have ebery opportunity, etc tec. This is so much more about the parents than the kids when it gets to the levels I'm reading about here... [ Reply | More ]

absolutely. it's a combo of needing the validation of having a top tier child (and that starts at preconception here, hence the rise of the $900 stroller) and a twisted sense of competition. Part of the child as designer accessory trend [ Reply | More ]

ITA. It makes you feel sorry for the poor "idiot" kid who can only go to *eek* Northwestern or a "lesser-Ivy" like Penn ! [ Reply | More ]

I always wonder what happends to the kids who really aren't too bright, or just don't have the type a, aggressive personality to succeed at all costs--do the parents conder themselves failures? Or kids like my best friend, who get into harvard, have a nervous breakdown, and end up happily going to culinary school? [ Reply | More ]

And somewhere is a kid who would have thrived at Harvard but didn't get to go because the kid who would have loved to be trusted enough and loved enough to follow his ambition was pushed into Harvard ! It's an ugly thing - this competition for status schools - and it seems to be praised here. [ Reply | More ]
