How about keeping dc at TT until Junior year and rent a house in West Virginia for senior year to apply to colleges from that address? Sucks to apply from NYC, no? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No it doesn't. Out of 50 dcs at a TT in NYC almost half will go to ivy and a large majority of the rest of top ten schools, weigh those odds with a public [ Reply | More ]

I guess those kids from TT who didn't get into ivy (the other half) who might have had a better chance if they came from WV? [ Reply | More ]

I doubt that, these schools have strong reputations and connections with all colleges, colleges seek out these dcs because they are far better educated and are guaranteed to shine, all the students are brokered not so with a public or even a private in WV [ Reply | More ]

I'm guessing a school cannot admit too many kids from one school. [ Reply | More ]

it can vary from year to year, esp if you keep in mind the number of legacies from certain prep and nyc schools [ Reply | More ]

np; I'm an Ivy alum but donate $0 and do not volunteer for anything. I don't think dc's legacy status will do anything, not even slightly, for her. There are legacies with buildings to donate, so... [ Reply | More ]

NP: it really has less to do with connections at college and more to do with how well prepared, how better prepared, even the poor students at TT privates are than their counterparts. HYP would not take multiple students from a single graduating class of 50 at one school if it didn't mean those dcs were probably their best bet for absolute success [ Reply | More ]

You would be wrong. Out of average 50 dcs in graduating class multiples will go to ivy [ Reply | More ]

I know. Say 20 will go to ivy, but not 40 out of 50. I'm talking about those kids in the bottom half of the class, not top half. [ Reply | More ]

middle will go to great schools williams amherst stanford MIT, johns hopkins, U of chicago those are the schools the remainder will go to and then bottom half is always serviced by connections, there are c students accepted to top 20 colleges or top liberal arts programs just because a C at a TT school is far better than an A or a B at a gen ed public anywhere else [ Reply | More ]

Ivy is not always the best option or education. Let your kid decide what he/she wants [ Reply | More ]

we are just going to buy a home in mississippi and use it as our mailing address. figure, you can buy a trailer for 30k, way cheaper than using a college admissions consultant [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if a Staten Island address might do the trick. The borough is under-represented at NYC private schools. [ Reply | More ]

you apply from a HS, not an address, so unless you're willing to have DC attend senior year of HS in appalachia, colleges will know he's no Jon Boy and she's no Mary Ellen. [ Reply | More ]

That's what I mean. In my public HS, we got a few Private school kids who transferred in for senior year. They all got into Ivy. They weren't the type to knock your socks off, but good enough students. Wondered if they faced tougher competition at privates (class ranking or whatever). [ Reply | More ]

They didn't have behavioral issues. They weren't stupid either. Got around 1350-1400 on SATs (back when 1600 was limit) [ Reply | More ]

yes, kicked out for academics. a failing dc at a top nyc private school will coast and do incredibly well at a public school elsewhere so either they get thrown out of parents realize there grades will be impressive in the last year and it may be their only shot [ Reply | More ]

Ivies don't usually accept more than 10-12 from any one school, even Andover or Exeter which are considered "feeder" schools to Harvard don't send much more than that because colleges want diversity of every form. Top colleges, whether Ivy or not, want kids with good grades plus distinctive qualities - Ivies want future leaders in all fields from sciences, politics, arts et al (plus future big earners, who will also give back). If your kid is average, regardless of what schools they attend, they will go to an average college. If they are exceptional, regardless of what high school, or legacy status or parents' income bracket, they stand a better chance at a top college. It's very simple. It's not just about scores or school names. It's the kid, stupid. [ Reply | More ]
