22 mo dc has been waking up in the night screaming. He really sounds like he needs comforting, but if we go in, it can take 2-3 hours to get him back to sleep in his crib. If we leave him, he's back to sleep within 5-20 minutes, usually until morning. We didn't CIO, so I feel really bad not going in when he's screaming for me, but going in and having everyone up for hours doesn't seem good, either. What [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think his second year molars are coming in. Give him Motrin and use Orajel on the bumps in the rear. [ Reply | More ]

Funny you should say that... we started giving Motrin a week ago, and he's now waking up once instead of two or three times. Thanks! [ Reply | More ]

If he falls back asleep that quickly I'd leave him alone. My ds went through a weird sleep regression around that age and worked it out. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the encouragement. It's good to know we're not alone. It's just so hard leaving him, especially when he screams for mommy! [ Reply | More ]

If it's taking you 2-3 hours you are clearly unwittingly overstimulating him. It happened to us early on too. We did CIO around 12 months, but we silently in his dark room (external light turned on just a little to give indirect light) checked on him if his screaming had the wrong sound. You are developing an ear I'm sure. We still check to make sure something wasn't really wrong or these days, because we are in Manhattan, that there aren't bedbugs in his bed or - like the very first night he slept in his own room at our country house when a bat got into his room. Little things like that can kind of ruin your night. [ Reply | More ]
