If you live in an apt building in NYC, would you leave a 6 month old sleeping alone in a crib, leave the apartment, to go downstairs to get laundry out of the laundry room? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes...and I did. When you don't have help, you have to do what you have to do. [ Reply | More ]

Make sure you have your keys & your cell phone & don't get distracted. It will be fine. I've done this many times & the fact that I knew an earthquake might happen while I was out of the house made me do whatever had to be done & get right back. [ Reply | More ]

but what do you do if somehow you can't get back? i don't think its going to work out too well fro you if you tell 911 to come get you out of the elevaotr and oh, your baby is alone in your apt. i know, very unlikely but its enough to stop me. [ Reply | More ]

NP: By that reasoning, why do you ever leave your apartment with DCs? A car could jump the curb and run you over on the sidewalk; you could trip and push your stroller into the street; etc. In the scheme of things, this is not a major risk. [ Reply | More ]

on some level, sure. but 1. laundry can wait and 2. for me the issue is not so much mere danger as the baby being alone. sure, my stove coudl blow up while i'm at home too, but i'd rather it nto happen when nobody is with the child. [ Reply | More ]

there's a BIG difference between leaving your kid in an unlocked hotel in Portugal while you eat dinner for long periods of time in another place and leaving your child in a locked apartment for 5 minutes while you're still in the building [ Reply | More ]

look, i know ppl do this all the time. however, not hard for someone to break into a locked door. the act of locking the door doesn't mean ppl are going to stay out if there's something in there they really want. it's your call, but since you asked our opinions, mine is: don't [ Reply | More ]

This is such a devisive topic. I'm usually in the better safe than sorry category. But, in this case, so many factors would have to converge - someone would have to want to break in to my apt at the exact time that I leave for 5 min. Unless I was being stalked, the odds seem so slim. I'd get the laundry - quickly and do nothing else. I couldn't live assuming that someone is outside my door ready to pounce the second I leave. funny that people are worried more about someone breaking in than something that would happen (fire, attack, police, anything) that would make it impossible for you to go back upstairs from the laundry room. [ Reply | More ]

I suppose the final test is what would happen to you legally if something terrible happened to your baby in the 5 short minutes you were gone. This didn't happen in my house but easily could have...my husband and 4 yo in early spring had a small pocket flashlight spontaneously combust after entering our car inside our garage and my husband had used it momentarily. It had 2 double AA batteries. The end melted off and spewed a huge black smoke cloud. This flashlight could have been inside our house. Near something flammable. Like the junk battery powered toys everyone gives your child scattered around his or her room. I never would have believed this could happen until it happened to us. You take your child with you. The laundry or pint of ice cream is not as important as your child's life. [ Reply | More ]
