Learning to read is a developmental process with a wide range of normal - like learning to walk - a non reader in first grade does not mean the school is lacking [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

exactly. I can't believe that ppl think a dc should be reading by 1st grade. All kids are diff. and it will come when it comes. The norm is btwn the ages of 5-7yr old. That's ok if the dc finishes 1st grade and just starting the basics. [ Reply | More ]

I wasn't reading until the end of first grade and I have 150 IQ, once I learned I whizzed onto books for much older kids. It's really not an issue. [ Reply | More ]

exactly. So many ppl freak out if their dc isn't reading in K. I don't see the rush. I would rather encourage a dc love of reading than discourage it by forcing them to learn at the age of 5yr old when they may not be ready [ Reply | More ]

np: That is certainly the case with my DS. He started reading on his own at 3yo, but now at almost 7yo, his fluency stinks and it's making it difficult to move on to the next levels of books. [ Reply | More ]
