DS will qualify for CTT for K, we are pretty sure, but our only CTT option is pretty bad. Non-IEP kids have bad behavior problems so are put in CTT. Also it's mostly a spanish-speaking class (we're in a spanish neighborhood). Will DOE let us go to a more appropriate CTT for our son? Really don't want to lie about address, but might be compelled to. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

In our school the 60% general ed students are hand picked because they are great role models. Not the children with behavoir problems. What school chooses behavoir problems to fill the 60% general ed seats? [ Reply | More ]

you haven't given any compelling reason that your zoned ctt class is not apporpriate except you don't like spanish speakers and your well behaved IEP dc will be negatively influenced by the poorly behaved general ed kids. Don't think DOE is going to by this - maybe work on the presentation a little more... [ Reply | More ]

i don't have anything against spanish speakers, would just like it to be a mixed class. This year's kindergarten was 100% spanish speaking families. And many of the non-IEP kids should have had IEPs. The school admittedly puts kids that they think should have an IEP becuase of behavior issues into this class b/c they don't have the services, funding or support to do something else for these kids. I'm not sure what you are looking for, if a teacher at the school told you the class is not good for your son, then ask that teacher to give you a reason to tell that to the DOE. But so far, you have said nothing specific about why your zoned CTT is not good and another unnamed CTT is better. You have to know what you are asking for and why before you ask. [ Reply | More ]

where are you located? it's a lot easier to get into CTT out of zone if you make a strong case. [ Reply | More ]

what do you suggest for a strong case? What are some reasons the DOE would approve and out of zone placement? [ Reply | More ]

Placement is inappropriate - class size, various issues in clas not match child's, room/school too large. [ Reply | More ]

They don't have small CTT classes, so class size isn't going to get you into another CTT class. The room/school being too large isn't going to cut it either. What School do you want your child to attend? [ Reply | More ]

Actually there are some that are smaller than others. I have toured CTTs that have 17kids and some with 28kids, but you never know until you see it and DOE can make them as large as any other K, whcih is 28kids [ Reply | More ]

I know several people who have gotten their kids into CTT classes outside of their zoned school, but in each and every case they hired a lawyer to present their case to the DOE [ Reply | More ]

I'm going through this right now. It is not going to be easy and though I've had some positive conversations with my placement officer and the placement officer of the zone I would like DC in it is not a sure thing but it’s looking good. I toured the zone school twice. Noted the issues I felt were inappropriate for my DC. Put that in a letter and that I was rejecting the placement and then sent with the unsigned placement letter. I also filled out an exception request form and am now waiting to see the out come. I've been dealing with resources for children and they have really helped compose my letters and responses. The best advice they gave me was be nice but firm you get more bees with honey! Its working and no I have not yet pursued legal action but have a lawyer to call if need be. Cross your fingers for me and I hope it works out for you as well. [ Reply | More ]
