I have 2 kids. Never an issue on the plane. Depends on the child [ Reply | More ]

Are you getting him his own seat or is he on your lap? [ Reply | More ]

I find the "of course" annoying. If I had advice, I'm too busy to share it now. Good luck. [ Reply | More ]

I don't want the advice of anyone who thinks that a lap baby (AKA Missile) is a good idea. [ Reply | More ]

np: The airlines are pretty much the only group that approve of lap babies. Everyone else in infant care or air travel thinks that every passenger needs their own seat. That says a lot. [ Reply | More ]

In a perfect world, maybe I'd have a seat for DD, but traveling is expensive and I can't always afford the seat. Such is life. Ready for this shocker: sometimes we take cabs with a car seat! The horror! [ Reply | More ]

It is dangerous for a child to fly without a seat. If you are willing to take that risk to save a few bucks, and can live with yourself if something goes wrong, go ahead. But I am not looking to you for advice on anything. We clearly have very different values. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Yeah, maybe she values money. I have 2 kids. None had their own seats until they were 2. Never had a lick of trouble. [ Reply | More ]

That's just luck though. You could have been on a plane with turbulence and had serious trouble. Most of us slept in cribs painted with lead paint and rode in cars without carseats with no trouble. That doesn't mean it is a good idea to do it. [ Reply | More ]

Do you have any evidence of lap infant injuries from turbulence? Just curious. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I was on a flight from Tokyo to Newark about two years ago that hit some awful turbulence midflight. Several passengers were thrown from their seats, including at least one toddler. We had to make an emergency landing in Alaska for medical treatment. [ Reply | More ]

Was the medical treatment only for the toddler? Or were other people injured on the flight? [ Reply | More ]

Several people were seriously hurt (head injuries, mostly). If your aren't strapped in, you can be thrown around the plane like a rag doll. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a pediatrician. American Academy of Pediatrician's statement is that all children under two belong in their own seats, strapped into an FAA approved car seat. You should treat an airplane no differently than you would treat a car. Just because someone told you that you didn't need a carseat in their car, would you hold your infant on your lap? The concern isn't the plane going down. The concern is a survivable emergency landing, a failed takeoff, or turbulence. In the event of an accident, child could be propelled forward with a force far to great for you to hold on. The case often taught is of a United Flight with a complex landing. None of the lap babies survived because none of their parents could hold onto them. But many of the seated passengers survived. [ Reply | More ]

A terrible flight and lots of people died, but do your research: proportionally more lap babies than passengers survived. But don't let the facts get in your way. [ Reply | More ]

I was unaware of this flight until now. But if you look at the flight as first class and forward (high fatality), and behind first class (low fatality), the results are quite different. And it NEVER entered my mind that in an accident, babes in arms would be put on the floor. What kind of craziness is that? The story of the mother who got off the plane but couldn't find her son in the fire is terrible. [ Reply | More ]

That's how flight attendants speak. Google it. Flight attendants are strongly opposed to lap babies. If you ever do fly with a lap baby, bring a birth certificate. Because it does happen that they challenge the child's age and throw passengers off the plane when they don't believe the lap child is two or under. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure it is. Why on earth would a flight attendant be in favor of a lap infant? It makes their jobs more difficult. [ Reply | More ]

What a wonderful mother you must be to have such superhuman strength. Not everyone can be so lucky and has to worry about how we would hold onto our children in an accident. [ Reply | More ]

Read up on the United flight referenced above: 1 of 4 lap babies died on impact, which is awful, but the SOP was for parents to put the babies ON THE FLOOR. The babies were NOT ripped out of their mothers' arms. [ Reply | More ]

The floor is for emergency landings. You would be holding your child in a failed take off or during turbulence. [ Reply | More ]

Look into an Eastern flight in about 1985. There was a thunderstorm and a few infants were thrown from their parents arms during the turbulence. [ Reply | More ]

I'm pretty conservative. If there is a risk I can easily mitigate, I do. If my child were hurt, it would be little consolation to me that the risk of injury was small. Other people feel differently. [ Reply | More ]

I can use a front carrier during the flight, or I have a flight safety vest that will give me enough room to maneuver for feeding. The seat is for takeoff and landing. The FAA forbids front carriers and safety vests during takeoffs and landing. [ Reply | More ]
