We have had the most adorable twin deer babies with their mother in our yard all spring. They nap right outside, play in the grass - it's like that scene out of Bambi every day. They are about 3 months old, I guess. For the last few days, mom is MIA. It's just the two foals, and they don't seem like themselves, have been sleeping even at night there. Does anyone know if deer send off their babies this young to live on their own, or (my fear) was her mother killed by a car? If mom is gone, is there anyone I can call to help the babies? I have no idea if they are old enough to survive on their own, am worried about them. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yeah, we don't bother with flowers. That and the deer tick checks are the downside of all the gorgeous new animal life we have at our new house. There are rabbits and chipmunks and herons and swans - kind of awesome. [ Reply | More ]

I'm pretty sure anyone you call is going to put them down, if they do anything at all. I could be wrong, but don't call animal control, call humane society for advice first. [ Reply | More ]

np true but they can probably refer her to some organization that takes in injured wild animals. Call Peta if the zoo can't help you [ Reply | More ]

exactly. The zoo might have good resources, including people who foster deer to allow them to rehab back into the wild [ Reply | More ]

So, not much chance this is just the age baby deer are sent to live on their own? Christ, I've watched the momma deer nurse the babies! I'm in tears about this. (Just found humane #, will call) [ Reply | More ]

humane society won't come out an kill them, which is a plus. I don't know if anyone rehabilitates deer. In most areas, the cities are paying to cull them not save them. I hope it works out for these cute little babies though. [ Reply | More ]

Left a message, hope they call back. It's clear the area is overpopulated - the nearby highway is littered with roadkill, it's awful. [ Reply | More ]

its VERY normal for mother deer to leave their babies for fairly long stretches of time. Don't move them, or the mother won't be able to find them [ Reply | More ]

Okay, thank you. I think it's been three days - does that seem normal? They used to always leave around dusk, slept somewhere else. [ Reply | More ]
