Seriously I have two kids and can not afford any of these expensive camps, nor do we have a summer home. My kids are seven and ten and I know its hard that all their friends are away. What do people do who have no money to send them to camp I fell so guilty [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

well, yes, but it's nice for them to have someone to play with over the next few months, and not everything costs a fortune. did you do nothing all summer when your friends were gone? [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. Who thinks every child needs to go to special camp in the summer or she will wither and die? Good grief. [ Reply | More ]

I never went to camp as a kid. I played with friends, played with my sister, read books, went to the library, road bikes, swam in friends' pools, etc.... [ Reply | More ]

Or try going to the playground, seeing other neighborhood kids around, etc. Surely not EVERYONE is in camp. In any event, they have each other and places like the library have plenty of free events. It's really not that tragic. [ Reply | More ]

It gets harder in NYC once you are 6 or so. No back yard for running around, can't ride your bike on the street. No friends or community pool. No basement that is cooler than the rest of the house. [ Reply | More ]

Most of those kids live in places where nobody (or few kids) go to camp so they play together in the backyards. That's still the case here in Ohio (we are here visiting ILs this week). [ Reply | More ]

We have to figure out a way to send dc to some camp, anywhere, because we both work and we need childcare for the summer. I don't know how we're going to afford it, either. (and yes, we're looking at Y camps and Asphalt Green). [ Reply | More ]

when i was young and my mom sah we would go stay with my grandparents for the summer. when she woh, i went to day camp. there are less expensive options in the city if you look around. you could also do 2-4 weeks of camp rather than 8. some camps offer FA. [ Reply | More ]
