This is 20 yrs ago, my HS college counselor tried to lowball me. This was at a so so public. Said I didn't have any chance to get an acceptance from a college I wanted. Turns out I did get accepted and with a lot of grants. At least my HS wasn't militant about not sending out a transcript because I defied them. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My guidance counselor (public) kept trying to get me to go to his alma matter (which was good, but irrelevant to me) and also told me I would never get in to my school. My parents made me apply to three reaches. [ Reply | More ]

np: My parents are immigrants. We didn't realize I could have applied to Ivy League until I got full scholarships to the schools the guidance counselor said I "might" be able to get into. I think she knew I'd get scholarship money and it would look good for her. [ Reply | More ]

Fake. If you had the SATs to get into Yale, there is no reason you wouldn't be recommended to go to state university over community college. [ Reply | More ]

You can say it's fake, but it is indeed true. I thought it was insane at the time. In fact, I suspected that he might be getting a kick-back from the community college. In retrospect, I think it was a reaction to a girl who was getting "too big for her britches" in the eyes of her very small town counselor. [ Reply | More ]

I posted earlier on a similar topic, but my counselro told me that I could "probably" get into a state school. I applied to 13 colleges and universities I was so upset and worried and wanted to get out of my state. I ended up getting into virtually every school I applied to including Ivy, Sisters, and others like Northwestern and such and while I was certainly relieved, I was also pissed that this schmo was in charge of this for others... Who knows hoe many kids were deterred from aiming high. [ Reply | More ]
