OK, had a plastic bag full of toys and puzzles. I got two puzzles out of the bag for dc and I to do together - dc tried to get in bag, I told dc to stop, tried again, I said, "If you touch that bag again, I will throw every toy in it in the garbage". Went into other room, 3 minutes later, dc reaches out and just touches the bag. I threw them out (waste of hard earned money and I'm pissed). WWYHD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Even at this age a bag of toys is irresistible. You're asking him to do the impossible. Can you retrieve the toys once you've calmed down and explain that you made a mistake? Its OK for them to know that we can make mistakes too. Put stuff away if you don't want him to touch it. [ Reply | More ]

At what age do you beleive you can tell your child not to do something (no matter how "irresistable" and expect for them to mind? Honestly asking [ Reply | More ]

Depends what it is. Safety issues are the most important. Asking them to not touch something so attractive and right in front of them is tough even for most adults. [ Reply | More ]

you set this scenario up. of course he went in the bag. only a spineless child lacking in curiosity would not do so. you should have removed the puzzles and put the bag away out of reach. and then you set up the consequence of throwing them away. silly. [ Reply | More ]

I don't get it - if the bag is out of reach, how do you set up the consequence of throwing them away? Shouldn't a six year old be able to mind? [ Reply | More ]

yes, but to threaten to throw the contents away, and then to throw the contents away, and THEN to be mad that you threw the contents away is just insane. poor little kid to have such a tightly wound up mom [ Reply | More ]

do you have kids? give her a break. we all say things we should not in the heat of a moment every once in a while that we regret. She can be frustrated with herself. [ Reply | More ]

I can speak for myself. I'm pissed that good money went down the drain. I am disappointed that my dc could not follow a direction I beleive a six year old should be capable of following - anything else you put in there is your own thinking and not mine. [ Reply | More ]

or: it's not about following a direction. it's about expecting a degree of impulse control and delayed gratification that is far more than most 6 y/o's (or many adults) generally exhibit. [ Reply | More ]

So, if I were happy that dc didn't do as told and that I threw away good money, you would be cool with this and would have acted the same? [ Reply | More ]

it clearly wasn't out of reach since dc reached out and touched it. op could have set up a consequence of putting all of the puzzles and the bag away for the day instead of throwing them away. asking a dc to put a dish in the sink or not to run into traffic is one thing - asking a dc of 6 y/o not to touch a bag in view, within reach, with goodies in it is asking a little more than most adults could deal with. Good for you for following through, but I know from past mistakes, you have to be careful what you threaten. so hard I know. bTW, why not allowed to touch the bag? [ Reply | More ]

It had been in a storage unit with moth balls (not in the toys) and who knows what kind of critters. We just got it out. [ Reply | More ]
