Prof wrote me a recommendation and said my organizational and writing skills were in the top 10% he worked with, but this is from a state school so I feel like him saying 10% doesn't carry much weight. He said he can revise any part of the letter. Should I ask him to edit out the 10%? Or do you think it's okay even if it's from an average school? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If you think so little of his credentials, you shouldn't have asked for a recommendation. [ Reply | More ]

He's not tenured, but it was luck of the draw when I registered for my clinical internship. He's the only one I could ask. [ Reply | More ]

i actually like the top 10% comment. is more specific than saying "very good" or even "among the best" [ Reply | More ]

ita, esp in a state school where class size may be larger. coincidentally, op is int the top 10% of cluelessness too [ Reply | More ]

if you can revise any part of the letter, ask him to give himself a title at a more presitgious university. [ Reply | More ]

The top ten part is quite generous--descriptive and specific. If you're apply to grad school with this recommendation, it will be well-received ( I sat on my PhD dept's admissions committee). And keep in mind that a lot of state universities have far better reputations than private universities and colleges; the public/private designation alone doesn't mean much. For instance, University of Michigan vs. DeVry. [ Reply | More ]
