My friend is smoking like a champ and she's trying to get pregnant. She's had one miscarriage at 8wks, and getting pregnant wasn't easy. I know there are studies linking smoking and early miscarriage as well as smoking and infertility but she seems oblivious to it and hasn't even paused to think that her heavy smoking could play a part in any of it. She'll stop smoking when she's preggy, but I'm concerned about how it may be effecting conception now and how the month of heavy smoking that precedes a positive pregnancy test may contribute to an unhealthy pregnancy. She seems desparate to have a baby and willing to do anything for that blessing - - - she makes sure she eats healthy foods, exercises, etc - - - - but I cant understand why quitting smoking wouldn't be an obvious step toward a healthy pregnancy. I haven't said anything to her but I'm dying to. Any suggestions? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you could just say, "you know, they say there might be a link between smoking and miscarriages or infertility" but thats the most I'd say. dont be preachy. If shes a smoker, she is probably already stressed about quitting too and all that [ Reply | More ]

imo - if you say this, you will end your friendship. there is no one out there who doesnt know the risks of smoking. not that i agree with her smoking, but you wont be telling her anything she doesnt know [ Reply | More ]

I was smoking when I became pregnant. I was almost 40 and was shocked to discover that after a decade and a half w/the same partner, we were expecting a child. I immediately stopped(so hard&miserable to myself and the world). My ob and midwives both informed me, that total withdrawal from a just- under a pack a day habit was incredibly physically stressful and could potentially contribute to possible miscarriage. Pharmaceutical and dermal nicotine delivery was not prescribed, due to other risks. [ Reply | More ]

Do you really think she's unaware of any risks? [ Reply | More ]

My midwife suggested that since I was already pregnant, I should smoke a couple a day, when cravings were the worst and gradually(but most certainly)taper to zero. It worked; I did this for a few weeks but what a shi**y feeling! Had I been trying or expected to conceive, I'd definitely have quit ahead of time. In the end, We had the most amazing, bright and well child but had it gone any other way, we'd have been heartbroken and I'd truly believe the smoking had been the cause. Suggest accupuncture.
