Just found out that we will be moving to manhattan this summer with our 5 yo ds (neighborhood TBD). Are there any private schools that may potentially have an open K spot? Are there any nursery-K programs? Or is finding a great public school our best bet? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

just opened, 1st class to start in the fall, and composed of those shutout from everywhere else. also, the preschool is freakishly rigid, especially for an uws school. [ Reply | More ]

The kids they got were great. Four of dc's friends are going there. Smart, bright dc, with nice families. 3100 dc took the ERB for 2400. I really doubt they have spots either, but you never know - people move. [ Reply | More ]

the 2 families I know there have sweet enough kids, but they bombed the various IQ tests. nothing wrong with that, but there you go. [ Reply | More ]

mandell accepted high scoring dcs who were unlucky to get shutout. the preschool has an excellent reputation and phenomenal art work. [ Reply | More ]

no--there are two classes of 20, and only one is made up of kids who were originally shut-out. the school has been around 70 years, and I also only know of very bright (95+ ERBs) who are attending in the fall. [ Reply | More ]

No need to "build it up"--it's a great school, but yes, I will continue to defend it. You clearly have an axe to grind, and if you think your posts will somehow prevent the school from succeeding, you're delusional as well. [ Reply | More ]

Only DC I know going to Mandell for K next year is a smart kid, with a great, outgoing personality and lovely parents. It was a bad year for admissions, and they weren't connected/were unlucky. [ Reply | More ]

there is nothing wrong with kids who were shut out anyway. My dc had a 96 erb and will be going to mandell. was shutout because it was a bad year esp for boys. no other reason. also, it is well known that Mandell is taking high scorers, not those who bombed the tests. or is clueless. When is your ds's birthday? If he turns 6 next May or later he will be in a pre-K class. Mandell is an excellent option if they have any spots left. ( Don't listen to the crazy Mandell naysayers on UB.) Has ds taken the ERB test? (SATs for 4 year olds) I would get on that ASAP if you want a private K spot. If you are looking at Claremont, ask them how many K classes they have next year. i hear they accepted tons of kids and have 6-7 K classes whereas last year they had only 2. [ Reply | More ]

np. Their bday cutoff is May? That's insane. Isn't that precisely the kind of stupidity that gets them a rep as a "freakishly rigid" school? To quote one of the posters from above. [ Reply | More ]

I am not talking about Mandell-I am talking about private schools in NYC in general. Agree it is insane, but it is a fact an thought the OP may not realize it is very rare for a non-sibling non-legacy boy who has a summer birthday to get in to any private K. [ Reply | More ]

Don't tell her that, because it depends on her dc. Many May, June and some July and occasionally August boys are deemed old enough to start K at five. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry I really disagree-that scenario is rare as hens teeth. Especially for a boy just moving to NYC-big transition + summer birthday? Why would a school risk it? [ Reply | More ]

I know plenty who were deemed old enough - she really needs to let the schools decide. She doesn't want to put her dc in PreK and then have schools say that ds is too old for K next year and that they have no spots for 1st. [ Reply | More ]

np. ITA. It's not as rare as the poster claims, and it's a bad idea to make assumptions about what the schools want. [ Reply | More ]

Without naming names (because those of you who know who this is will be able to guess from my post), there is a child going next year who is the daughter of a successful NY Theatre Director and a TV Actor and the grandchild of a legendary Broadway Director. Very rich, connected, successful and cultured people and they chose Mandall. [ Reply | More ]

Please don't try to raise the reputation of a school by naming (or referring to) a famous family that sends their child there. It's not fair to the child. Also, every private school in NYC has somebody famous associated with them. Most of us resist the temptation to name them. It makes you and your school look bad if you do. [ Reply | More ]

Hey I don't even go there! (Or rather, my kids don't). i was just responding to the "shut out" theory above. this family CHOSE Mandell out of a lot of choices. They were not shut outs. [ Reply | More ]

You have no idea how much of a choice they had. Rich, connected, successful and cultured people are a dime a dozen in NYC. Too many for all of them to be able to choose where they send their dc to school. [ Reply | More ]

it does happen. unfortunately the parent's league, which is like a clearning house for all the schools, is closed for the summer. They keep track of openings like this. But I would call all the schools and ask. Also, your child will need to take the ERB to be considered, so call the ERB office ASAP and get a test scheduled. ANd certainly move to a neighborhood with a great public in case nothing else works out. Oh, also, call the DOE and have your child tested for a G&T program. This year they did the process different and didn't have wait lists. They said any spots that open b/c people turn down a spot will go to kids moving to the city over the summer, so that may be your best bet. [ Reply | More ]

You can try IDEAL. It's somewhat new, going into its third year. My dc goes there. It's small, but lovely. An inclusion school, so all kinds of kids of different abilities, much like publics. very low key, but tons of individualized attention. they have a preK, too. and no ERBS. [ Reply | More ]
